I need a table top tripod and found an older Leica model tripod/ball head..... but the owner does not know if it will fit the new M8/M9..... Does anyone know if the M2, M3, M4 tripod mount are the same on the new M's. TIA

Here is a pic of it,

These threads have been normed since Fox Talbot. 98% of modern cameras have the smaller size, as have the M8 and M9, There is a larger thread as well, but there are screw-in adapters. So yes - it will fi.

Thanks..... screw in adapters? Sorry for being a complete newbie, but if modern camera have smaller size threads.... how can an adapter be fitted for a larger ball head thread.... Or I might of just misunderstood. Can you elaborate.... thanks again.

It will look someting like this and allow you to convert the tripod screw from 1/4 to 3/8.

I need this on either my IIIf or my M3 - can't remember right now - to use modern equipment. The screw in my Leica ball head can be reversed, it has the smaller on one end and the larger on the other.

Yes- that is a nice multifunctional thingy. You can (obviously) use it as a table tripod, to stabilize the camera against a wall, as a pistol grip, or even as a support against your breast.

for some reason.... I can not visualize the stabilizing the camera against the wall thing. I got the rest of them...

Stabilize against a wall? Works well. Hold the tripod against a wall firmly, tilt the ballhead (with M8) 90-degrees so the camera is level, swivel a bit to frame your shot, lock the ballhead, shoot. Brilliant. Rock solid.

Thanks for the help fellas..... I think im just gonna pull the trigger on these....

Red, that package is perfect. The head locks better than the head on the smaller version you first showed, because of its knurled ball.

It's one of the strongest heads on the market, but small enough to fit in your pocket. A perfect example of Leica engineering, IMHO.

At one time (probably still the case today), the large ball and socket head was actually made by Leitz/Leica, while the now discontinued smaller heads were made by an outside contractor.

I have the same and on my M8 works just fine. Buy it and and enjoy it, it's a very fine object. I often use it without the head, the screws are the same.

Only recommendation, always put the longer leg in front, this way is more stable.

any other recommendations as to a table sized tripod?

Yes. The Leica table-top tripod is bulky, heavy, over-rated and overpriced, IMO. The Manfrotto 345 is a much better bet; lighter, cheaper, more compact, more flexible and perfectly capable of supporting an M - I have had one for years and it is in fact my only tripod. Go for the Leica if you like little rubber feet falling off, have inordinately large pockets or have a nostalgia fetish ;)

You're right about it being over-priced but I think that's about the only thing that can really be said against it. The price is indeed totally ridiculous but nobody's yet marketed a copy that has the same durability or all-round practicality. The little Manfroto 345 isn't really tall enough (for me) and with the extension post is hardly a model of rigidity . . . but I suppose it depends on just what you want one of these gadgets to do.

And to be fair, you're also right about needing big pockets if that's how you want to carry it (or indeed to buy it in the first place!). Personally, I think putting most photographic accessories in a suit or jacket pocket simply ruins the hang of the garment and makes for a sartorial disaster . . . :)

...the job ;)

Personally, I detest tripods; an M was never meant to be stuck on a set of artificial limbs. There are times, however, when there is simply no alternative, and the Manfrotto does the job just fine - I have never had stability issues with it. At current list in the UK, the Leica setup is the thick end of £300, and the Manfrotto £60. I can buy an awful lot of film for the difference :D

Oh and I agree with you about ruining the line of your suit, of course ;)

Bill
