M9 - New Material of Manufacture

Speaking to the guy at Robert White this afternoon he made mention of the fact that M9's are less available now than they were. They had no idea when, or how many, would arrive on their next delivery.

 

He described the M9 as being manufactured from an invisible material known as unobtanium. It tickled me.

 

I still don't have an M9 though and won't be getting one from RW before June/July/August.

Thanks for the update. I can't seem to find unobtanium in the Table of Elements. It must be a new addition, and it must also be extraordinarily rare and expensive--available only in very small quantities.

Maybe one can't see M9s,because they are made from unvisible material?

Unobtainium is an old term used in the early days of Space exploration, but interestingly it was copyrighted by Jim Jannard (Founder of Red Digital Cinema) many years ago for a rubber compound they created and used by his then sunglass company (Oakley) to coat his products with a grippy material. It has since been used in several movies like Star Trek and Avatar.

This element is obtained from a deep mine under the Leica plant in Solms. It is mined by gangs of Leica Steiff Bears working round the clock. After being refined in Wetzlar it is retrurned to the production line in Solms.

Although Leica is currently one of the worlds major producers of this material it sometimes releases small quantities to other photographic manufacturers.

Concerning the M9 the "unobtainium" material is the original camera cover leatherette which has been replaced by authentic "Hèrmes Chicken Balls' Leather" :D
