im posting this under M9, as there is more activity here and the question is related to what color M9 body i get.

i am hoping someone could give me a brief history of leica's use of the silver finish on their more recent lenses. it seems that silver is available in a select few lenses now. the current version of the 35mm summilux is available in black only (when did they discontinue the silver version?).

i am interested in the rumored new 35mm summmilux, would it be fair to assume that this lens may not be offered in silver for the get go? i appreciate i am asking about a lens that has not been announced. but i have never seen that stopping some of you passing on your 2 cents.

any thoughts might be helpful.

thanks

The current black lenses are lighter.

Not so...on two counts. Silver is a lighter color. And, more seriously, the latest lenses that come in silver, e.g., the 50 Summilux asph, weigh the same according to the Leica site.

Well, they don't. Both my Summicron 35 asph and my Summilux 50 asph in chrome are considerably heavier than their black counterparts.

Of course, it is well known that silver lenses take better images :p

Why do you think that they might offer a chrome version of a lens that they only offer in black now? Even if there is to be a new version any time soon?

Well, the 35 Summilux has been offered in chrome in the past. The last entry in the Leica lists I find is from Oct. 2004. I am not sure about 2005, but there is only a the black version in the list of Jan 2006. They introduced a chrome version of the 28-cron in 2009. The 35-cron and the 50-lux come in chrome. A chrome 35mm Summilux is not improbable therefore.

Don't know about the 35, but every site I've checked shows black and silver 50 Summilux asph at 335 g. Have you actually checked? I thought the more recent silver editions were constructed with different materials than their older counterparts, rendering weights the same.

I, too, am very interested in the rumored 35 Lux. And I would VERY much prefer to be able to buy one in chrome. My current version 35 Lux is chrome, as is my 50 Lux ASPH and my 90 Elmarit.

Yes, they're a little heavier. But Leica lenses are pretty tiny to begin with and I very much prefer the classic look of chrome.

Alas, my guess is that the new 35 Lux will be released as black only. I would very much love to be wrong.

BTW, the silver 28 Cron is not really a chrome lens. It is silver paint.

FYI

Actually Leica made a silver anodized version of the 35summilux ASPH few months ago.

It was made like the 28cron ASPH silver (aluminium not brass) and it was sold together with the Hermes MP edition in 2009.

S/N were above 400xxxx so they were actually produced recently.

The 3 latest silver lenses offered by Leica were made of silver anodized aluminium:

The 28/2 Asph, 28/2,8 Asph and the 200 limited 35/1,4 Asph made for the M7 Hermes.

Leica Camera AG - Special Editions

Leica 28mm f/2.0 SUMMICRON-M ASPH Silver Anodized Version Lens

All the previous ones were made of chrome over brass, including earlier 35/1,4 Asph.

What it means for the future silver lenses I don't now, but we can see a pattern.
