stealthman_1 Posted March 17, 2010 Share #41 Posted March 17, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Good for you! I have a Dragon Edition M6 that was as-new when I bought it, they made 500 of them too. The way I look at it, I've helped the collector market by taking it out of collector condition! And even with scratches and nicks, it's a better looking camera than 99.9999% of the cameras I see daily. Enjoy it, it will never get ugly.

lincoln_m Posted March 19, 2010 Share #42 Posted March 19, 2010 Julian, Just watch out for the strap marks from the standard Leica strap with plastic ends. The M6TTL and M7 have black plastic protectors on the sides to stop wear from the strap. After 6 years I've just put some black insulation tap around the Neoprene bino strap ends that I use instead of the std strap. Or get a nice leather strap with leather scratch protection. Don't get a Leica everready case as the hard leather will scrape the body covering with repeated in and out of the case. Holding the MP naked ( camera not you ! Ooo not tried that one yet something for the weekend perhaps?) is the best feeling, photography wise you understand. So black PVC tape up your strap on, or use leather, go naked and you'll avoid too much rubbing and get a better feel. As others have said it is best to take it out in public as that is what MPs are supposed to do and not stay in the House. Enjoy, Lincoln

pgk Posted April 8, 2010 Share #46 Posted April 8, 2010 Scratches are medals. Well in that case my longer owned Leica is pretty valiant. My car on the other hand is an absolute hero (and remains unwashed after 9 years, it too is very much for use). Anyway after the first mark the rest are far less worrying:D. Xmas Posted April 9, 2010 Share #48 Posted April 9, 2010 Sheesh! I wonder if HCB had these problems. Hi and Welcome One shot of HCB using a M and probably a type I cron, shows him palming a hood cap - on a lanyard, so he may have taken a few 'cap' shots, before then. But lots of people use a beaten up old shooter, some have a glass case as well. Noel
earleygallery Posted April 9, 2010 Share #49 Posted April 9, 2010 Consider this - imagine two Leica's for sale in a collectors auction, both authenticated property of the great HCB. One is boxed and mint, unused. The other is the well worn but fully working camera he used to take his iconic images. Which would sell for more, and which would you prefer to own? Mike Rawcs Posted April 9, 2010 Share #51 Posted April 9, 2010 "I've been lucky enough to buy a new black MP. It now has brass showing through in places which I think of as its unique fingerprint. Go and make this camera your own." Antistatic is correct, use it; make it your own, unique, M.
Hank Taylor Posted April 10, 2010 Share #52 Posted April 10, 2010 You got to use it! This reminds me of my son who bought a new Toyota 4 wheel drive and when I saw him a month later I had to ask him if he had taken it off the main roards . Much to my surprise I was told no,"I don't want to scratch the paint!" Son I said, "it' like God giving a man a penis and being told it's only to be use for pissing!." Michael Hiles Posted April 10, 2010 Share #53 Posted April 10, 2010 Don't just use the camera - make PICTURES. That is what all the work was for when it was designed and built. For the display case, get a Fabergé Egg.

gberger Posted April 11, 2010 Share #55 Posted April 11, 2010 When you'll shove it against your face and look through the viewfinder, you can't see what it looks like. What you WILL care about will be that glass-smooth shutter release!
Guest JoanMarianne Posted April 11, 2010 Share #56 Posted April 11, 2010 I know someone who shoots game with an ancient English side-by-side gun made in 1920-something and with lots of signs of usage. He is an excellent shot. On a rather up-market shoot in Yorkshire once, someone loaned him a Purdey. He missed everything, being too preoccupied with the thought that he might scratch the stock, or whatever. Is there a parallel here?
frc Posted April 11, 2010 Share #57 Posted April 11, 2010 Sitting here with my brand new "stahlgrau" M9 reading this thread I'm realising more and more how I am missing the excitement of having a new camera. When I bought my silver chrome MP with the 50 Jahre birthday party Summicron 50 I was shocked with what I had done. The amount of money, the pristine, over engineered, and fantastically designed ( form follows function ) piece of gear on my table. All too overwhelming. Starting to use it was a big leap. ( Don't drop, scratch, bump, ........ etc. ) Thinking back at that time a second MP comes to my mind. AN LHSA Hammertone Gray MP. I had the choice. I was in great doubt. It would have been one of the most beaten up ones of its kind considering how my silver one looks now. Regret? Not really. It came with a Summicron 35 asph in matching colour. This means I would have never purchased my Lux 35 asph, my 95% of the time used lens. And the collectable, limited edition "50 Jahre Summicron" 50 mm., scratched, bumped, maltreated, within limits. I love the way it makes the M9 thing look like a stupid little old camera. Better start doing some picture taking before I start getting even more off topic;-) Do with your beautiful camera what it is made for; load film, start taking pictures! edit: the M9 my post started with is only bought with the picture taking in mind. I noticed that the Nikanon I use for assignments was mainly zoomed to 35 mm. and started realising I had a better lense than the Canikkor L af if asph auto DIY collecting dust on a shelf. I have to agree. When I was able to I bought a used MP. The first thing I did was to throw away every box and piece of paper that came with it, then loaded it with some C-41. It's looking mighty fine, all the brasing is my own. Here's a shot taken with it from the beach near Lagos, Nigeria. Welcome, dear visitor!
