Guest maddoc2003jp Posted March 16, 2010 Share #21 Posted March 16, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) You made a bad mistake, your need an - armoured glass safe for M9 and MP - a bad condition M2 and a beaten up summaron 35mmf/2.8 or similar CV 35mm f/2.5 - lens hood for aron - wrist strap A carrier bag of about 50 XP2 cassettes. The M2 will amaze you for handling, when you have a pocket full us used cassettes you drop them off at mini lab for next day dev and scan only. After a few days you can sell the MP and M9, and buy more XP2 Noel P.S.. Set the cam to 1/125 and lens to 2m and f/5.6, you see something push the button hammer the lever wind for 2nd try. :D:D ... except for the XP2 (Tri-X fits better to the M2, IMHO)
Advertisement Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 Hi Guest maddoc2003jp, Take a look here Just bought an MP anthracite to try film but.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Xmas Posted March 16, 2010 Share #22 Posted March 16, 2010 :D:D ... except for the XP2 (Tri-X fits better to the M2, IMHO) Well he is an M9/MP owner, he is gonna want to set the film speed somewhere and will wonder why he is setting the aperture to /5.6 and the speed to 1/125, and where the little lights are... The XP2 has much more latitude and any mini lab will process and convert to CDRoM, so next week we can have him using Rodinal at 1:100 for 120 minutes, for Tri-x... if he wants to. (I use Delta 400...) A beaten up M2 can be less than 400 GBP. CV about 200 GBP. Noel
antistatic Posted March 16, 2010 Share #23 Posted March 16, 2010 ...or use the camera. Take The iconic image of the 21st century with it. Hold out for a good slice of the pie when Leica release the limited edition "Julian Thompson" MP. Sell your original but now beaten up MP on EBay for ten times what you paid for it. Scotto Posted March 16, 2010 Share #24 Posted March 16, 2010 I once had a 911 RS which was very low mileage and in perfect condition. You certainly aren't lacking taste.
alun Posted March 16, 2010 Share #25 Posted March 16, 2010 Well, Julia, you're hardly short of advice on this but I'll chip in anyway. Use it. Use it. Use it. Don't baby it, but on the other hand take sensible care of it. Do NOT throw away any (any at all) of the original packaging/documentation. This way I reckon you'll have all the pleasure and satisfaction while also hedging your bets should you wish to sell it for the best possible price later. But failing that -- and I am quite serious -- I would say if you have any doubts, then sell it now and treat yourself instead to the used M of your choice and use it until it sighs with pleasure. Karreaux Posted March 16, 2010 Share #26 Posted March 16, 2010 Some time ago I had the same feeling with my Silver M6 Classic. It just looks stunning and un-used, so i was thinking about buying another well used black M6. But i think thats just wrong. Leica is a masterpiece of photo engineering, made to use A LOT ! So load it, make it your best friend and get old together
norgas_co Posted March 16, 2010 Share #27 Posted March 16, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Julian, perhaps use it and enjoy the experience. In the same token that you've driven the RS you once had. I do understand where you are speaking from in terms of being a good custodian. If your photography keeps you along the digital path then your anthracite MP will stay mint and pristine. In case film will drive your future passion and this MP wears after 10 or 20yrs, and decide that you'll want another pristine LNIB example to replace this, am certain you will be able to find another from somebody who has held on to one still unused. IMO there seems to be no real shortage of collectibles in our lifetime, usually a matter of price and timing if you will really want to find one. Enjoy! Julian Thompson Posted March 16, 2010 Author Share #28 Posted March 16, 2010 Some great advice and much needed nudges in the right direction. What a friendly bunch you film guys are I will (try!) to load it up tonight and see how I get on - it is, after all, just an MP that happens to be grey rather than black or chrome! NB23 Posted March 16, 2010 Share #29 Posted March 16, 2010 So basically, you purchased a camera that you can't afford to own since the "resale value" is of such importance to you. And yet, while not be able to really afford it, you are keeping it unused. That's a mega Oxymoron, think about it. If I was you, I'd use the camera to hell and back or I'd sell it right now in order to invest the money in someting worth investing, to make it work for me. Right now, as it is, you locked up money indefinitely. Not wise, not wise.

GTM Posted March 16, 2010 Share #31 Posted March 16, 2010 Strangely I feel much more ambitious with my M6 then I ever did with my Canon 5D. I know they are both fairly sturdy but I look at the Canon 5D like a sickly child, always ready to catch the latest bug. I look at the M6 like a marine. I'll bash his head off the counter and he'll sneer and mutter 'is that all you got fatboy!!'

Guest dk_samurai Posted March 16, 2010 Share #33 Posted March 16, 2010 ...but now it's here I just wonder if I'm going to beat myself up as it gets worn in, thus removing some of the pleasure from the experience. Are you saying that you might regret wearing out the camera, and thereby having lost the feeling of owning a mint collector's piece in the future? The analogy of owning a mint sports car and using it every second summer isn't quite the same in my opinion. Having an MP that's just a different color than the rest isn't a spectacular special edition. Would a collector take it out of the box every 2 years, shoot one roll of film, then put it back into the box? Would a collector just have it for the investment? Seriously, regards of how pretty the camera is, I cannot understand the collectors way of thinking. Unless it's owned by a famous photog, I don't see the idea of keeping a camera, without using it (unless it's got sentimental value from someone you inherited or something...). Julian, you already made the choice to use the camera when you bought it. Now that you've got it and realize how pretty it is, you're having second thoughts. The camera isn't really that unique, after all 500 of them were made (or was it a 1000?). There are still lots of them being kept in dark sealed boxes, so getting an unused copy is not rare. However, seeing these grey cameras being USED is a rare sight... so why not go out and use the grey MP, well knowing you're one of the few brave souls doing so? /David
Xmas Posted March 16, 2010 Share #34 Posted March 16, 2010 An MP is the wrong camera an M2 is nicer, if you want a collectible you can get a BP M2, still nicer than a MP, whatever the MP color. Noel
Julian Thompson Posted March 16, 2010 Author Share #35 Posted March 16, 2010 The camera isn't really that unique, after all 500 of them were made Yes you're right - it's more a marketing special edition than anything, designed to wow the Japanese collectors I guess, who apparently are into such things in a big way. It's still very, very nice though, and I shall feel privilaged later on as I load the first roll of many into it!

Julian Thompson Posted March 16, 2010 Author Share #37 Posted March 16, 2010 Right well - film loaded and I've taken a couple of shots. The M9 feels like a toy compared to this in terms of build. What an amazing piece of engineering. Can't wait to see the first roll tomorrow !! Welcome, dear visitor!
