ckchen72 Posted March 10, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 10, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I will be receiving an M9 shortly, yay! If I remember correctly, there were some that argued that in the M8 you should actually UNDER expose a little, is that true, and is it trie of the M9? Also what have people's experience with postprocessing been Lightroom or Silver f/x? and any experience printing from lightroom/ or silver fx to epson 3800 ( I have only used photoshop before) Thanks so much!! Pophoto Posted March 10, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 10, 2010 Hey Calvin, Congrats on your M9. I find that exposing the M9 is no different than exposing most digital cameras. I don't know about the M8, but shooting the M9 with Aperture priority is usually pretty much spot on, and the same when manually set as well, that's my experience. Although having said that, depending where you set your focus/exposure area will play a part! So basically set and recompose might be something to remember in the back of your mind, but then again... you'll find out real soon Lightroom makes editing many photos very easy and silver f/x is also a pleasure to use, very intuitive programs once you sit down and face it head on. In fact the whole Nik Collection is excellent. You won't find it identical to photoshop. I usually take it back to Photoshop to print myself... since I don't really print that much. Hopefully others can shed more light there! Po Pophoto
michali Posted March 10, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 10, 2010 Calvin- Congratulations on your M9. You will love it! I've had mine since September 10th, and a couple of 000 exposures later, not one problem to report, touch wood, other than having taken a pic once or twice with the lens cap on which requires you to remove the battery to reset, my own stupidity. My standard setting on the M9 is exposure comp set to -1/3. I also use LRoom & Silverfex and an Epson 3880 printer, plus M9, a killer combination! My only advice with the printer, if you have not already done so, is to make sure that you install the specific paper profiles. Also you should have your computer screen calibrated, otherwise what you see on screen and the final print product are not the same.
cfritze Posted March 10, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 10, 2010 "...other than having taken a pic once or twice with the lens cap on which requires you to remove the battery to reset..." lens cap on is a problem if set to Auto shutter speed, correct? I believe rotating the shutter speed dial to a manual selection breaks you out of this problem without having to remove the battery. Without my camera for the first time in months today, so can't immediately confirm.
jaapv Posted March 10, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 10, 2010 I can understand the -1/3 for the M8 for general use, but my M9 tends to underexpose when I do that.
AlanJW Posted March 10, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 10, 2010 I can understand the -1/3 for the M8 for general use, but mM9 tends to underexpose when I do that. My experience also. M8 needed -1/3, sometimes even minus 2/3. M9 files appear better (to me; this is after all very personal) at no offset at all.

Same for me. M9 underexposes, certainly with wide angle lenses, with -1/3. Fortunately there's a lot of latitude with underexposure and the M9.
haroldp Posted March 10, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 10, 2010 I use my M9 mostly in aperture priority (sometimes manual), and under a normal range of lighting conditions, it is close enough that minor tweaks in RAW processing snap it right in. Regardless of where I process images from several camera's, I print only from Qimage. Regards ... Harold
