mhoersch Posted March 12, 2010 Share #61 Posted March 12, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I agree, alas. Anyway, no idea if the Pentax will ever be available beyond the Japanese market (sure you can import one but better be able to read Japanese menu). But the fact it exists at a third the price certainly raises the bar for everyone. Personally l'll stick to film MF and 35 digital. I think where Leica should have gone is with a larger sensor rangefinder ala the Mamiya 6. That would have been great, indeed!

stunsworth Posted March 13, 2010 Share #63 Posted March 13, 2010 Put the fingers of any primate into the basic grasp position and guess what fills the space? I expect it differs between male and female primates. Then again, perhaps not.

rosuna Posted March 16, 2010 Share #65 Posted March 16, 2010 An interesting article: Pentax 645D – Fiest Impressions & Interview Speaking about the price, competitive offerings typically sell in Japan for 3 times as much as the announced price of the 645D. How did you manage to achieve such a low price, and what does that mean in terms of positioning relative to the rest of the market? Several factors helped with cost. The first is the target price itself. By selecting a price point that we believe is accessible to many potential buyers we could build a business plan that allowed us to get lower prices... "The price point is key here. We have seen high end DSLR selling for 7000-8000 US$ capture a significant part of the traditional MF market and this tells us that people would be willing to spend that much for a suitable solution." mhoersch Posted March 17, 2010 Share #66 Posted March 17, 2010 An interesting article: Pentax 645D – Fiest Impressions & Interview Thank you for the link! A very interesting read, indeed. In my ears the answers of the Pentax representative sound very sensible and well balanced - not the usual marketing hype of "We are the best and the greatest!" I wish Pentax and their camera all the best.
rosuna Posted March 17, 2010 Share #67 Posted March 17, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The problem is the effect of the introduction of this camera on the sales of the S2 camera. The Pentax will be a huge success, no doubt.
eleskin Posted March 17, 2010 Share #68 Posted March 17, 2010 I am less worried about how this Pentax will affect S2 sales than what I can afford, especially in this economy! For me , the Pentax is a blessing and makes medium format digital within my reach. Besides, I have an old 645n with lenses that has alot of dust on it from sitting. I went digital with the M8, and that was a financial stretch for me. For my budget, this looks like a great deal. Pentax deserves my business here! mjh Posted March 17, 2010 Share #69 Posted March 17, 2010 When Leica decided to enter the medium-format market, some believed it to be an unfortunate move as that market was just too small and quickly going to fold anyway. Admittedly the death of the Hy6 system many had put their hopes in was a huge loss and the acquisition of Leaf by Phase One and then Sinar/Jenoptik leaving the MF market surely weren’t reassuring steps. But in the same vein, the Pentax 645D should be most welcome.
oronet commander Posted March 17, 2010 Share #70 Posted March 17, 2010 The Pentax will be a huge success, no doubt. As for expectations, this statement from the Pentax executive says it all: We are confident in our ability to sell several thousand bodies in Japan this year. Bold indeed. rosuna Posted March 17, 2010 Share #71 Posted March 17, 2010 The MF market would sink due to the typical prices of MF equipment (x2,5, x3, x4 the prices of the top "pro" 24x36 equipment), slowly but inevitably. The MF market was in the hands of two players, Hasselblad and Phase One (the other players were dead). Even in these conditions those two survivors were trying to reduce prices (offering outdated equipment at lower prices, say x2 the price of the top "pro" 24x36). Leica's entry didn't changed this scene (they wanted to compete against Hasselblad's "top" offerings!). The MF market will expand if the prices really decrease gravitating toward the x1 mark, and Pentax has done it.
pierovitch Posted March 18, 2010 Share #72 Posted March 18, 2010 Interesting reading. more info here than a Pentax forum:cool: Image results will count in the end. Cameras should be designed for best image quality. Your images will be around longer than any digital camera or net gallery. Make a poor choice and it will haunt you for life.
