50mm Summicron M & M8

The official hood for the 50mm Summicron is the 12585, but on my M8 I get better shading and no vignetting if I use the 12575 which was originally made for 90mm lenses on full frame.

Would it be possible to post a photo?

Doesn't that big thing block your viewfinder? Just reluctant but curious.

You know how the 50mm frameline is made of four segments that don't meet at the corners? At infinity the area blocked by the 12575 starts almost at the bottom of the vertical frameline, then arcs left and down to a point about 2/3rds of the way from the edge of the frame to the right-hand end of the horizontal frameline.

Focused at 1m, the hood is just beginning to intrude on the area defined by the 75mm framelines.

This doesn't bother me - I can use my left eye to see the whole area if necessary - but may bother you. OTOH anyone who needs an absolutely unobstructed finder should be using an SLR anyway.;)

One more question.... are you able to attach the lens cap once the hood is attached?...

The lens cap can only be attached to the lens itself but there is a hood cap (# 14033 or older) that can be attached to the reversed hood as you can see in the pic above.

Hmm... do users remove the hood then when finished? I thought a bigger lens cap could be used on the thread of the hood?

The 12585 did not come with a top cover cap if memory serves. I just reverse the hood and put the hood cap on AFAIC. Protects the lens quite well this way.

Heavystar offers on the bay a well made black metal hood for the 90mm lens that fits the Summicron 50mm very well when used on an M8. The hood also features a cap and costs less than $20. I mounted the hood on an IR filter and observe no vignetting nor viewfinder blocking. I have the latest version of the Summicron 50mm with the built-in hood. This hood is so small that it hardly protect the IR filter!

Best regards, Maarten
