does the M8 only accept 2gb sds? I had a bunch but they've seemed to disappear from my backpack and now I need to buy about 4-5 of them. Does anyone know 1. how I should buy 2gbs sds in bulk and 2. if the m8 can go up to 4gb, 8gb, ect.

M,

If you are asking about SDHC cards, the M8 does not handle those at this time.

I have used 2gb cards successfully, and prefer the Sandisk Ultra II SD card.

I have also used a 4gb SD (note: NOT SDHC) card from Transcend. I don't know if this card is still available, but I got it because --even tho it is out of spec for the SD card spec -- it allowed me to put 4gb on a card.

The price for this is speed. It takes twice as long to write to this card compared to the 2gb Ultra II card. However, if speed is not a concern, it holds a lot. Of course, if the card is not available, this is academic.

If you have installed the latest firmware (check Leica site at Leica Camera AG - Photography - M8 & M8.2, "updates" version 2.004 is the current latest) then SD and SDHC cards both work, if you have earlier software then you need to install the firmware first using a SD card. Once you have done that all is clear for using both SDHC and SD cards without further concern (SDHC is faster & I find more reliable, am using a 4GB SDHC card from sandisk).

SDHC should work for firmware 2.000 and higher, check one but last item in the camera menu.

EDIT: SD cards work up to 2GB, higher can be problematic (see Bill's post where he reports a 4GB SD card is slow). For SDHC cards the sky is the limit but most prefer 4 or 8GB max.

mb, Safari doesn't need to open the file. The M8 does that.

At the same place where you got the M8 firmware update there's a download available telling you how to install it. Works smoothly as described. Just be sure you M8's battery is fully charged to start with.

Mine has firmware 2.004 and I mainly use it with a 16GB Sandisk Extreme III and a 2 Gb Lexar professional (backup). I did notice a huge difference than using slower cards.

I did try 8Gb Sandisk Ultra II and it's took at least twice the amount of time to start up the camera and the wait for it to save the images is unbearable.

Stephen--I think SDHCs top out at 32GB. Panasonic's latest cameras support SDXC, the "new" 'new frontier.' :(

As you said, the SD standard was specified only up to 2GB. From 4GB to the next step is specified as SDHC. From there the next step is specified as SDXC, a format the M8 doesn't handle.

Transcend made some non-standard (neither SD nor SDHC, though labeled as SD) 4GB cards that were usable with M8 before its firmware allowed SDHC. They still work with the SDHC-enabled M8, but as you and Bill said, they aren't to be recommended today.

I see this on the download site, in the FAQ:

2.1 Can I use all SD/SDHC cards available in the market for the M8 and M8.2?

The choice of SD and SDHC cards in the market is already very big and is constantly growing.

Therefore, Leica Camera AG is not able to do comprehensive compatibility- and quality testing with

all available cards in the market. We recommend “Extreme III” or “Professional” from the leading

brands such as “SanDisk” or “Lexar”. Using other card types, will not damage camera or card, but

as especially “no name” cards do not respect the full SD or SDHC standards, Leica Camera AG

cannot warranty full function with those cards.

Is there someplace where it says when SDHC cards became usable in the M8.x?

Bill, that is at least 1 1/2 years ago. It was communicated by Leica in their newsletter and discussed ad nauseam here. I am not surprised it has disappeared from the Leica site by now

I've never updated my firmware. I tried to download it and got "Safari can’t open the file “m8-2_004-1.upd” because no available application can open it."

You don't have to open it. You just follow the upgrading procedures as reported on either the user's manual and the Leica website.

If I remember well, transfer it on an SD card and then operate via the camera menu. But carefully check that.

To download it, you should click on the link and select "save link as". This usually works on Win and Linux. Dunno on Macs, too long time I don't use them.

Besides, I'm flawlessly using Lexars SDHC 4Gb all the time .

Cheers,

Bruno
