X1 in Malaysia

Hi guys, I passed my X1 to vincent of schmidt marketing a few days ago and he called me up today to tell me that the camera had been fixed. I hope this is the end to the whole episode and that my experience with my X1 will be sweeter from now on.

I just hope that they used the right kind of glue and that there will not be any adverse reactions to the leatherette or the plastic housing. Keeping fingers crossed!

I was blasted to be insolent in daring to suggest the attributes of a"ruggerized" version of X1 in my other posted threads elsewhere in the X1 Digital Forum. Was desiring for a splash proof version armored in rubber clad or something like that. I do not live in a tropical environment, but was hoping to take X1 into streets or in my job in active sewer lines, and use for reportage situations, but alas suddenly realized the fragility of the X1's body. The leatherette pieces are die cut on flat surface, then glued to the magnesium aluminum surfaces; thus its memory is therefore flat, not curvy to the sensuous side curves. In addition, the surfaces are flat, void of any indentations, so one really grip tightly the body with your forefinger and thumb in situations where the left hand is not available for use, so what happens? In my situation I am actually pulling the right hand side leatherette away from the lens, around the sensuous curve, and now the edge that come in contact with SD/battery cover is starting to fray and to my horror will be peeling off. May be I am freaking out, but I have the same fear as expressed in this thread. You can actually start to see the leatherette being pulled form one side of the infamous cute Red Dot. When the situation becomes unbearable I will contact Leica Camera USA in Allendale NJ. They have been extremely helpful in expediting my order here in the US.

I note with disgust that a certain shop in Kuala Lumpur is selling it bundled with a Leica bag at a not so very cheap price. When I enquired if they will sell just the camera alone, the answer was a straight forward NO.

Hi, New here. Just bought the X1 two weeks ago. Very pleased with it :), though so far hasn't got the time to go out shooting. I was offered the X1 with the leather case as well, must have been charged for it in the price.

So far no issue with the peeling, yet...

In Pavillion.

Hopefully they have come to their senses and not sell it bundled.

Hi,

I know this shop. If you want to buy the M9 from them, you have to buy 2 lenses at the same time!

Hi,

I received mine last week. I hope nothing will happen to my X1.

Here some sample taken by me I shot with small camera .

Nice the way the X1 renders those subtle ripples in the water. With a lesser camera they would not have looked so natural.

Well folks, I hate to say this but after I had waited about three weeks, I got a replacement X1. Higher serial number BUT it also has got slightly lifting vulcanite!!! So the replacement X1 is now going back to the Leica Store Mayfair. Can you beleive Leica didn't (thoroughly) check a replacement before sending it !?

Looks like this is going to run and run. The store said they had not heard of anyone else with the lifting vulcanite problem . . . . hmm

Like someone else here commented a while ago, Leica will be in danger of losing everything if they neglect quality control. After all here we are with faulty Leicas and word is spreading.

no excuse for the problem but I believe that the leather coming of is a problem that can be managed and I am sure Leica will fix it.

It would be worse if the camera mechanics or electronics would not work in hot environment.

I really do like the idea of a rugged version x1.

I agree, they need to get it under control, sorry to hear of your trouble.

hythe... sorry to hear your issues. I had my X1 replaced as well and thankfully, the new unit does not have the skin peeling issue any more.... but now, it has the semi-closed battery door issue which i'm simply ignoring as I don't want to send the camera back to Leica and lose more valuable time with it.

Hi. I'm also from Malaysia and can (happily?) confirm it's not really a Leica X1 problem... I've had the same thing happen to my Olympus E1 (which is supposed to be rugged -- fully weatherproof and all that) and Digilux 2; a friend had the same problem with his Fuji S5 Pro. The humidity just makes the leatherette peel away from the camera bodies over time, especially if you tend to use it outside in the heat of the day.

Understood, but this camera isn't an Olympus, Fuji, or a Panasonic. This camera is a Leica! I expect more.
