X1 future expansion possibilities and options

Just a stupid thought I would like to share with you and ask your opinion about.

We have seen that Leica has decided not to put any operation/function on the focus ring around the lens; many have inferred that that place will be used in future to attach other accessories and also adapters.

Does this mean in your opinion that we are likely to see a lens conversion adapter for X1 and thus in some way being able to have different kind of lenses to be attached and have a kind of "interchangeble lens X1"?

I'm very curious about your point.

Kind regards to everybody.

In my opinion it does not seem likely that Leica will offer lens adapters to the X1. Someone pointed out that the D-LUX4 has been out for quite a while and we've yet to see a Leica attachment (please correct me if I'm wrong here). IMHO it would seem a little out of character for Leica to add a tele or wide screw on conversion lens.

All that being said I'm not sure why there are threads on the barrel, maybe a lens hood?

Can we be certain that they are threads? As stated by me elsewhere, I think they are merely concentric rings to secure the lens cap. Just look at the sharp edges of the attachment clips inside the cap. Those clips have to grip something!

I think we may be talking about two different parts. One of them, like you said the concentric lines to secure the lens cap and the other being on the 'barrel' of the lens. Remove the lens cap and then twist the barrel. This portion unscrews to reveal threads. I'm not sure what the OP had in mind though.

As seen at 2m35s into this video:

Panasonic released a wide angle converter for the LX3, which (being an identical camera) was compatible with the DLux 4. However it was only the LX3 which had a menu option to recognise that the converter had been attached.

Certainly not inconceivable that Leica or a 3rd party could release something similar for the X1.

Maybe an adaptor for digiscoping? That would make sense, and has been done before.

Quite feasible but doesn't that add considerably to the budget! A 'scope would be an expensive telephoto lens.

...not if you have one already...;)

As I say, this has been done before, with the Digilux 1, IIRC.

The Mayfair Leica Shop has already demonstrated a third party digiscope adaptor on the X1

Such an attachment would considerably enhance functionality, so I hope so. I don't think it would impact on M9 sales -- it's a completely different approach.

digiscoping seems quite e bit an "extreme" solution... what do you think about a simple adapter for a zoom lens?

No zoom lens is simple and a zoom attachment even if possible would be too bulky as would be multi-element and need manual adjustment . The X1 lens is probably too fragile to accept such accessories. I think lens attachments for X1 probably not a good idea. How would they fit? The outer lens mount unscrews but even if some accessory lens screws on to replace it, how would it focus?
