Ecaton Posted March 1, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have an opportunity to buy an Elmar 50 mm, serial number 39.........., which would be production year 2002. Am I right in assuming that this is the latest version which can be collapsed into the M9 without any concern?

UliWer Posted March 1, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 1, 2010 Yes, you are right. There is lot about the Elmar here: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/117256-leica-50-elmar-2-8-samples.html If you look at the photos by epand56 you'll see how excellent this lens can be. scottwallick Posted March 2, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 2, 2010 I have an Elmar 50 serial 399---- and it collapses fine on the M9. I just don't mount/dismount the lens when collapsed and my M9 has been fine. No internal wear or marks so far.

Mauribix Posted March 2, 2010 Share #7 Posted March 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) FYI: I can mount and dismount it when it's fully collapsed too without any problem. My s/n is 398... If you make a search in the forum, you may find that this is possible with some samples of the lens. I used it with the M8 too in the same way, no problem indeed. BTW: Great Lens! My dealer still has a couple of them in stock, great value for money, and IMHO, far more pleasant than the 50cron and 50summarit. Good choice. Bought it yesterday for USD 600 (A- condition), quite a bargain.
jaapv Posted March 2, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 2, 2010 Thanks !I love my 50 mm 2.8 Yes- this has been proven to be nonsense over and over since 2006. Even Leica officials themselves have said this, The legal department may be a bit overcautious in liability control. I find it absolutely without any problem to mount and dismount the lens when collapsed. You need to be extremely butterfingered to hit the side of the lens mouth, and even then the worst that can happen is a small mark that can be touched up by a spot of flat black paint. UliWer Posted March 2, 2010 Share #11 Posted March 2, 2010 Thats why I don't mount/dismount the lens when collapsed Eelco Than you are missing the opportunity to start a thread in this forum about scratches and marks in the grey or black paint of your camera. 250swb Posted March 2, 2010 Share #12 Posted March 2, 2010 I also have no problems mounting the latest Elmar when its collapsed. The depth from lens mount to shutter is about 23mm and the depth of the collapsed lens from lens mount to rear baffle is 21.5mm, so there is plenty of room. UliWer Posted March 2, 2010 Share #13 Posted March 2, 2010 You are right that the collapsed lens would not touch anything near the shutter; so one can collapse it when it is mounted. Though if you mount or dismount it when it is collapsed you might touch and scratch the sides of the camera's throat. This may be not harmful, though everybody should think twice wether he says "no problem" if others might follow him without realizing the consequences. The_hog Posted March 3, 2010 Share #14 Posted March 3, 2010 Could scratching the cameras throat perhaps make way for erroneous rays jumping around from some other lenses causing havoc - anyway - my dealer called: my M9 will be in my hands this time next week
