A grip and viewfinder on the X1

I was out locally, a day or so ago, on non-photographic business with just the X1 in case opportunities arose. Lighting was very good but the wind was exceptionally strong making framing at arms length a shaky process. (Depression over the Azores affecting SW England). I only tried a few shots, which were partly successful; but how I longed for my long awaited viewfinder and hand-grip. In fact, how I wished I had my M6 or M8! In very bright lighting it is less easy framing an image.

For outdoor opportunistic and street photography, I am firmly convinced that a viewfinder is essential, despite adding to the camera's profile. I can live with that.

In other situations, notably indoors, the LCD is very usable, making it ideal for social photography.

I realize that most forum members have yet to receive their X1s, but there was a hint somewhere that the X1 accessories were filtering through to dealers. Mine was hoping for a delivery last week but was disappointed. Has anyone actually received any of the listed X1 accessories? Location would help plot progress globally.

wda,

My Leica dealer, Meister Camera in Berlin, has all accessories available now! I ordered the hand grip and expect to receive it by Tuesday next week. As far as the VF is concerned, I would like to try it myself first, since I use glasses.

Regards,

Nothing at my dealer yet (Taiwan). I'm really looking forward to the adding the grip ASAP.

Lucky you. If I can't get the grip locally in the next few weeks, I may resort to an overseas purchase. About the VF and glasses, I tried the VF with my glasses on without any issues, although I'm not 100% sold on the idea of purchasing it yet. If you purchase one let us know how it goes.

I tried out the Leica viewfinder and I found it fine with glasses on. My local Leica store says my X1 should be ready for collection next week. Think I will get the VF grip and ever ready case while I'm there (all the accessories are in stock).

tried it out as well (without glasses) and i must say, the x1-viewfinder is not good at all.

there is only one way to look through it. as soon as you move your eye a bit the viewfinder gets fuzzy. very disappointing.

What am I missing here? You shouldn't have to look through the viewfinder in multiple ways... you just have to look through it compose your pic and be done.

yeah, it hard to describe.

you have to look through it right in the middle and with an perfect angle of 90°, otherwise it gets fuzzy. it's just "crap" - at least the one I tried.

I think what you claim is true of any viewfinder. You have to align your eye with the optical axis of the viewfinder otherwise it will never work in the way intended. It is a simple case of operating technique.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm trying to think of a case where I wouldn't want my eye aligned.

I have some Voigtländer viewfinders and this is not the case with them (not even with the optical viewfinder for the olympus pen).

It is really hard to explain. With the X1-viewfinder there seems to be just one point (exactly the middle) where you can look through and it doesn't get fuzzy.

as soon as you move your eye around (e.g. to explore a corner) or don't have your eye aligned EXACTLY (!!!!!) on the optical axis it gets weird and sometimes you even see the framelines doubled.

it's really annoying as it kinda "hurts" your eye because its always changing from clear and sharp to "fuzzy".

maybe someone reading this and having the X1-viewfinder can confirm (or deny - than it just might have been a bad copy) my observations.

Here is an update to my OP of interest to members in the UK. I have received news from Leica that a shipment of X1 accessories left Germany last Friday and should be with UK dealers this week. Hopefully I will receive mine by Friday.

Welcome feedback Infinite. I am glad the grip meets with your approval. I use grips on my M6 and M8; so I will be pleased to receive mine for the X1. And the viewfinder. And a spare battery, essential for busy shooting days.
