L1, No RED DOT but HALF the Price

One more bit of pricing intelligence: Consumer electronics manufacturers also practice something called “spiffing”. This involves them shipping additional product at no charge to the retailer if the retailer hits certain volume targets.

...I just didn't want to pay the extra cost for the SAME camera...

Fred, i've heard this 3 times since 2002, with the Digilux 1, the Digilux 2 and now the Digilux 3. I can't say anything about the D3 but it's been proved that the firmware of the D1 and the Panasonic LC5 were different and gave different color rendition at that time. I don't know if it's the same for the D3 as well but i would not conclude on this point as long as i don't see side by side comparisons AFAIC.

LCT, the in camera color profile only kicks in when you shoot JPEG ... it all boils down to the raw converter you choose when you take RAW pictures.

There are firmware differences between the LC1/D2 and L1/D3 as regards .jpg images but (as has been documented elsewhere) they're otherwise identical for RAW images.

There are a few other detail differences between the cameras (mostly cosmetic) and for some people, these may well be worth the difference in price. You pays your money, etc.

Of interest! If the RAW is the same with both cameras one could assume that if C1 supports RAW on the L1K then it should support RAW on the D3. C1 for one example (there are other RAW converter examples of this) does not recognize D3 RAW, it does recognize L1K RAW. I am not sure that means anything, but there ya go.

Cheers. Terry.

Terry, there's little header in the metadata area of the RAW file which tell the RAW converter, ie. C1 ... ok, this is the file from A, you do this ... now, that's file from camera B, you do that ... whatever. If C1 doesn't update their software to read the header correctly then the Digilux 3 file surely won't be recognized, then once they update, the software recognize the file ... will (perhaps) apply a Leica-ish color profile as a different treatment to the L1 files.

Otherwise, nothing is different.

C1 ver 3.7.6 does not support L1K RAW at all, I'm afraid.

What an interesting argument being held on our Forum that draws funds from Leica for its support....

It reminds me that Panasonic lacks a similar place to come and ask, learn and share how to use their version of the camera.

Which leads me to the following conclusion: that until they do there's no point in having this kind of "low-ball" discussion at Leica's expense.

Thanks.

Allan
