Top plate mod for M9

Ok. I love my M9, but the design of the Top plate seems a bit odd to me, the sharp edge above the wiewfinder is really bothering me and my eyebrow.

It might be that i´m holding the camera wrong causing the problem on my eyebrow, but i did not have the same probem with my M8. Am i the only one who is bothered by this?

As showed in this thread: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/116117-johnathan-slacks-book-m9.html#post1232233 the M9 prototypes were equipped with a small plate to level out the top plate.

I want a similar thing on my camera!

At the moment i have taken a small thing used under chairs for floor protection and taped it on to the camera, although it gets the job done, it does not look pretty. (see attached)

Any ideas on how to get this fixed? With the right connections it wouldn´t be hard to manufacture a small plate, would it?

I think someone else on this forum has also reported this problem. As hard as I try I just can't get the edge to stick into my eyebrow (or any other part of my face).

Maybe the fellow who sells the thumbs-up thing could machine you something that would look a bit neater?

wattsy: Yes i also read about a few other that reports the same, maybe i should contact Thumbs Up.

bybrett: Yes know, thats why my suspicion is that i´m holding the camera in the wrong way, i.e pressing on to hard... Maybe i just need to toughen up ;-)

Matleb, do you use your right or left eye to focus?

(I'm just curious).

Good question. Also are you having this problem horizontal and vertical?

When horizontal cradle the camera in the left palm to take some of the weight. Then lean into the camera there shouldn't be any need to press the camera too hard against your head.

Are you wearing spectacles?

I suppose some people could be more sensitive than others around the eyebrow, particularly in hot or very cold weather where the pointy corner bit may cause irritation. I think you should be able to whittle a section of wood or plastic to act as a fillet, use double sided tape to keep it in place.

Mauribix: I use my right eye.

bybrett: No specs, and only when i use the camera horizontal.

I think i might be using my right hand too much, it supports the whole camera while im focussing with the left hand, i think i need to work on my grip.

250swb: Yes it think your right, this is cut out for a better DYI project. I need to go material scouting!

Hi.

I have reported the same problem in an earlier thread. There is a nerve ending in your eyebrow that, if pressed, can cause a headache. I too have made my own device that sort of works. I also tried the eye cup mentioned (34mm) but found the rubber too firm, the cup too small (the big one just looks ridiculous) and it holds your eye too far away from the viewfinder due to the thickness of the threaded centre part, making it hard to get an eye full when using a wider lens.

I used to have a great eyecup on my D3 that did the job superbly. I've tried to find something similar for the M9, but to no avail.

I too would be interested in a prosthesis that would cure the problem.

You are not alone, we must both have equally deformed skulls compared to others.

Cheers

B
