Krauklis Posted February 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear friends, As Leica Camera AG continues leaving us DMR (battery) users out in the rain with run-down batteries without offering spare ones I have taken steps myself. Following a fellow forum member's hint I've found a small "battery clinic" and they built me an external battery pack based on a run-down battery which now serves as a dummy in the DMR, (see photos). As I do a lot of outdoor photography, (sitting in hides all day at low temperatures), I do no longer have to care about battery capacity and replacement etc. These people will also repair my second exhausted battery by replacing the rechargeable (original Sanyo!) cells and sealing the container again. (They did so for a friend and it works). Here is the link: Akku-Klinik Neue kraft für alte Akkus Regards -krauklis Welcome, dear visitor! jaapv Posted February 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 22, 2010 Looks good, looks very good. I'll save this link, when I will need it. Maybe there would be a way to make an M8/9 remote battery pack as well. <wistful sigh>

Krauklis Posted February 22, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted February 22, 2010 This looks interesting. How many exposures per charge are you getting with this rig? I'm still testing. Some technical data: - Li-Ion AkkuPack 7,4 V 13Ah - 10 cells Sanyo 18/650 3,7 V 2600 mAh I don't understand very much about electronics but that seems to be a rather powerful unit. SJP Posted February 22, 2010 Share #10 Posted February 22, 2010 I won't hold my breath on how long that will last before recharging is necessary, maybe if you use it to fry some eggs or start a tractor.

ihw Posted February 25, 2010 Share #14 Posted February 25, 2010 Thanks very much - hope for the future! Leica have recently promised me that they are still actively pursuing a solution to the DMR battery problem and as soon as I hear from them I will post. However the battery life of the current system was always very short in my opinion (I always carry three batteries!) and your solution overcomes this problem. Another solution which I have toyed with is to use the lead which is attached to the DMR mains adapter (which I have never used) and attaching it to an external power source. Krauklis Posted February 25, 2010 Author Share #15 Posted February 25, 2010 Looks great, how much did you pay for it...? //Alex I asked the manufacturer about publishing prices and he prefers to be contacted directly, as (different) prices are based on individual, technical requirements and ideas. -krauklis
Krauklis Posted March 1, 2010 Author Share #16 Posted March 1, 2010 In addition to the external battery pack (#1) I had another battery (which was fading away quickly) reanimated with new cells. It works perfectly and gets into and out of the DMR smoothly. The traces of the treatment are visible of course, for me they are signs of manual work, all adhesion surfaces have been polished and are smooth, the seams are sealed. -krauklis Welcome, dear visitor! leicamr Posted March 1, 2010 Share #17 Posted March 1, 2010 Nice to see the external battery solution. I have obtained the pin connections of the DMR external power socket. I have also opened one of my dead packs. I will be getting a quote to have the Sanyo cells supplied and connected as per the original and I will then solder them into the pack. I did contact one battery supplier who sounded a very strong warning about the care that these cells require during charging. They stated that should the charging electonics be damaged during the installation of new cells it could cause the cells to explode due to excessive voltage. Fair point, but we live in a dangerous world, don't we. I will update once I have had my battery pack re-celled. Mark Welcome, dear visitor! roguewave Posted March 2, 2010 Share #18 Posted March 2, 2010 krauklis, can you give us an estimate of the weight of the battery pack? I'm very interested in this. I could keep the big battery in my backpack & not have to worry about changing batteries. Does your supplier speak or read English? Thanks, Ben

I could keep the big battery in my backpack & not have to worry about changing batteries. Does your supplier speak or read English? Thanks, Ben Hello Ben, my (her!) kitchen scales only know baking ingredients. This was new to them: battery pack - 630g spiral cable - 300g straight cable - 145g (I prefer the spiral one) dummy battery - 50g The supplier speaks (and reads) English, I suppose. The other day he told me that several forum members from the international section had contacted him and asked about specially designed battery packs. Try your luck!
