This is a rockhopper penguin, one of five penguin species found in the Falkland Islands. Just before they hop they hunch their shoulders so they can look down. This is on Seal Lion Island.

For those of you not familiar with Ed Sullivan, the final step in his career, after professional boxing and sports reporting was as a host of a TV variety show which began in 1948 and ran through the 1960s. He spotted and booked the talent, and delivered a well balanced show with something for everyone. The popularity of his show allowed him to become an astonishing star maker, as well as to book the first US TV appearances of legends like the Beatles (February 1964) and Elvis Presley. His stone face and odd, stiff posture were easy to mimic, and if you’ve seen him, you can recognize him in this bird.

You can see perhaps too many more Falkland Island photos on our site.
