My wife is going on a trip to Cuba with a charity/mission group. Can someone advise about the following: electric service to charge camera bat. ( yes she is borrowing M8) and phone battery? Voltage / reliability? Is it reasonable to bring a laptop ( which will stay in hotel room) and is there internet service? Cell phone service and access. Any photo restrictions or recommendations? General safety? Any other tips appreciated. Thanks. Coos

If I remember correctly, the Cubans have US type electric sockets.

They do have Internet in Cuba but you will be lucky if you can find an access point and it will be even harder for you to connect your laptop - I guess it depends on the hotel or who you are staying with. Even then the connection will probably be old style dial-up. They do have cell phones, the problem would be if the US government allows US networks to sign agreements with the Cuban networks. What do you think?

Regarding restrictions, I believe it is actually worse in London. That said you just have to be sensible and refrain from taking photos of military installations and the like. Otherwise Cuba is a photographers paradise.

As for safety - and I can only refer to my experience of Habana - beyond the tourist areas you should be vigilant.

My tip would be - only buy Cohibas from legitimate shops or a cigar factory. And take Euros in preference to Dollars.
