I will be visiting San Diego next week for business and will have some spare time and will take my camera with me. Need advise from somebody who is familiar with this area. I will be staying in La Jolla.

Thank you in advance

there are tons of areas to walk to in down town la jolla, mostly beach, but its more rock than sand in spots. lots of shops and restaurants where people are walking around. if you take your time you will find hidden stairs, old homes and all sorts of interesting stuff.

i always like the beaches this time of year. less crowded, low tides, and usually big or stormy surf.

the cove, children tide pool (i think the seals are there), walk north and you will find a surf spot called hospitals. usually nice tide pools around that area and to the south is wind n sea beach. or go north around the cove and you will find the shores (have a few restaurants on the street and a nice sandy beach with a pier on the north side, scripps aquarium, or you could walk around the trees at UCSD. the glider port, torrypines golf course. then there is mt. soledad memorial. its endless.

a short drive you can hit the north end of the boardwalk in Pacific beach. if the weather is nice all sorts of people come out.

if you want to drive further balboa park is nice.

i guess it depends on what you want to see and shoot.

Architecture: Santa Fe Station, Coronado Hotel, Balboa Park

Landscape: Torrey Pines nature preserve (separate from golf course), Balboa Park.

I forgot to mention Mission San Luis Rey, a little ways out of town. Different from Mission San Diego, mentioned in another post, which is also nice. San Luis Rey has more of a Moorish flavor to its architecture, and is IMHO gorgeous. Also, if you can get an hour out of town, Mission San Juan Capistrano. That mission itself was largely destroyed in an earthquake, but the smaller buildings and the garden are nice.

Torrey Pines is a great place for a leica user.

so is a walk threw down town S.D. if you like to shoot people.

I'll stay away from downtown if they're shooting people !! :)

But the Gas Lamp district is nice, Little Italy and Harbor Island too.

Point Loma and the light house (Cabrillo?). You can get some great views from up there.

Take the harbor boat tour on San Diego Bay, cheesy and touristy but you can get some nice photos from the water.
