... As for the cowboys. Didn't they get chaps on their legs from leather? ...

Ugh, I should have seen that coming. Horrible! You win!!! :)

And it shortens by studs ...

And is more than ridiculously expensive...

"By studs"? That's what killed my fingertips with the M5 strap.

"More than ridiculously expensive"? Coming from Leica, that's truly scary! :D

Well, I guess the strap question is in good hands. Just look at the M9 Titan.

Howard, my ancestors at that date would have raised a quiet "good riddance" at the demise of Gustavus Adolphus. They were subjects of king Christian IV of Denmark, who founded the city of my birth, after said Gustavus Adolphus had burnt down its medieval predecessors, together with many villages.

99 Euro for a narrow piece of leather, a bit shortish, two aluminium studs and two small keyrings.....Oh - and a silver cardboard box.

I had the same problem when I first unpacked my M9.

However, I called a good friend who has been into Leica for years and went to his house for a demo.

It took him only seconds to show me how to attrach the strap. And, since...I've changed straps and now use the original strap with a hand held grip strap. Thus, the best of both worlds.

When I am tired I can hang the camera around my neck or shoulder - otherwise, it is always at the ready in my right hand.

However, those strange triangular grips are also available at a good camera shop...should you need more. I was fortunate that my good pal who taught me how to put on the strap purchased the hand grip for me as a gift and with it he purchased two extra triangular clips.

It' works perfectly for me with this arrangement.

Once you learn how to put on the strap you will wonder why you couldn't figure it out on your own...it's really easy.

All the best,

Norwin

Funny to see this thread tonight. I just sent an M8.2 to Leica NJ for a cleaning, just before the warranty was about to expire. I decided to send the strap in as well since I noticed (before it was too late, thankfully) that one of the plastic thingies that holds the strap on to the lug had cracked. I asked them to attach a replacement part and charge accordingly.

Surprisingly, though, the techs couldn't just replace the plastic piece since they said it would require cutting and stitching the strap, which they didn't do. My option was to play seamster (?) myself, or buy a new strap. They kindly offered a nice discount, so I opted for the new one. The camera and strap should arrive Friday, so I once again hope that the strap goes on quickly the first time.:)

Long winded way of saying that I've always used and liked whatever strap came with my M... for the last few decades.

So, the strap isn't covered by the warranty? Those plastic things shouldn't crack.

I did not read the entire thread so it may have been said already but the easiest way to attach and remove the strap is to remove the metal clasp from the strap first, put it through the eyelet and then attach the strap. I purchased the black label silk strap for an arm and a leg and I like it a lot. Short length, very comfortable and doesn't twist .

Remember the sequence in the Reichmann M9 intro interview where one of the visitors has attached her strap incorrectly and Stefan Daniel fixes it for her at no charge!

All power to reading the instructions. :)

Assuming you can:

- Put up wallpaper

- Do some Bathroom caulking.

- Change the faucet valves

- Cleaning the camera's sensor

ya gotta be able to change attach the camera strap to the camera.

Come on guys, surely you're jesting.

Personally, I use 1980's-era Leica straps. Every time I run across one I buy it (one pending right now!)

Similar basic engineering and attachment process, but a wider strap, heavier wire "IUDs" and larger, slightly softer plastic sliders less prone to cracking (I broke one - once - slamming it in a car door) - and with two on each side, so there is a backup to slide down into place if one DOES break.

I was actually using them for 2 decades before I ever got a Leica body - I loved them on Nikon FM2s, and kept them whenever I traded a body (so have installed/removed them a couple of hundred times and learned the technique ;) )

BTW - in actually taking my M9 strap out of the box where it has stayed in its plastic wrap for 19 months - I do notice it is much trickier to fiddle off the wire loop. I stuck the tip of a pair of scissors through the loop for leverage in pulling down the plastic slider.

Below: 1980s strap, top; M9 strap, bottom. The 80s strap should be installed PAST the narrow neck in the loop, so that only the small half-moon of wire is visible.

Indeed, I have one of these (which I kept when I sold my R6 IIRC), and I don´t understand why Leica didn´t stick with that vastly superior design...

That said, my M9 is now supported by a lovely Luigi strap that I got dirt cheap on a Swedish auction site (nobody here, except Lars B, knows what a Luigi strap is, so no more bidders...:) ). But, if I ever have to change, I´ll use the R6 oldie instead of the new original.

A point of curiosity for me. Those of you who favour a shoulder strap, do you prefer it on the shoulder the same side as the camera, or the opposite shoulder, such that the strap crosses your chest when hanging? I'm interested in the functional ergonomics of how it works, or otherwise, for you.

Across the chest.

Then I can move around freely, without having to worry about loosing the camera. I can also make the camera hang under my right arm in stead of hanging on the stomach like some <put in nation at taste> tourist.

I am very happy with the Leica strap, btw I use an early 80s version. However in some situations, I prefer a wrist strap (Luigis)

Good question, Andy. I just emailed my contact; will let you know response.

Jeff

Good news...Leica will replace the entire strap at no cost. Thanks, Andy (and Leica)!

Actually, there is more involved with this recent customer service experience...bizarre scenario, but all with a happy ending in progress. I will post in the customer service section at a later date once fully resolved.

Regarding earlier Leica straps, I had forgotten about them. Used them for many years with no problems. I hope the change wasn't purely economic, but seems so. If enough people require replacements for the new ones due to breakage, perhaps economics differ.
