What fascinates me about this thread is not the over-abundance of exclamation marks, nor the hissy handbag-swinging, but the probability that every new MF camera is going to have somebody describing it as an "S2-killer"...

Jung would have had a field day with some of you lot.

Regards,

Bill

Pentax needs that MF camera. It is not a question of sales or profits... it is a question of brand value. They need it desperately. The need a foot on the "pro" ("serious") side of the market. That would help sales of the DSLR cameras... Pentax is playing the Olympus game, but that game will be owned by the large consumer electronics companies (Panasonic, Samsung, Sony...). For the people buying those cameras (compacts, small cameras with interchangeable lenses) the classical photography brands means nothing... specially if they don't see these brands operating in the "professional" side... That is the trend...

Hallelujah and Amen to the revival tent idea. Maybe by sheer force of prayer the congregation can get Leica to reduce the price of the S2 by 50 or 60%. Meanwhile, an affordable larger format camera, whether Pentax of otherwise, would be welcome. Even if the S2 is superior, competition produces increased choices and better products.

better is not superior I gather? Maybe you meant cheaper products or more bang for the buck (perfomance/price) products? Then I would tend to agree, but as long as can remember Leica has been about 4x more expensive than the competition, so..... the S2 is relatively cheap i.e. only about 2x more expensive than the competition.

Choices are irrelevant, Leica decides what is best for us as they have more experience and insight than your average man in the street concerning optics & camera's.

Does anyone tell Chateau d'Yquem that they should make some other sort of wine? Rose perhaps? No they remain cantankerous and unique, it is part of the brand labelling.

There is no obligation to buy an S2 and I do not intend to buy one as it is not for me, that's all. Anyone else if free to buy one if they feel the need.

Of course Leica will choose what it wants to offer, like any other company selling products. But if the consumer does not choose what Leica offers, and Leica wants to continue to grow it will have to fill some consumer need. It has done so very successfully in the M series, where it continues to satisfy demand for Leica lenses and bodies. Consumers have voted "yes" with their pocketbooks. And I think the M9 is a hit precisely because Leica listened when consumers said they wanted a full frame digital. The question is whether Leica can achieve the same success by striking out into MF with an innovative, high quality but very expensive product that may have unique attributes. I think the jury is still out on that. The same ("the jury is out") goes for the X1, where the competition is closer, has introduced their own innovations, and is generally less expensive. The point is that Leica must operate in the context of a larger market where consumers (by making choices) may or may not agree that what Leica offers is in fact unique or "better" or "superior". And even if it is "superior" people (like you and me) may choose not to buy because they choose to get something else --- or nothing at all.

It is very appropriate to say that Leica still has to proof if the S2 is coming close to other MF solutions.

Compared to Hasselblad I only can doubt it. And I am not talking about the new products like the H4D40 or higher res backs, but just compared to H3D39, which delivers such outstanding results in IQ and operation and speed, that Leica is still far away from this benchmark.

Comparing it to newer products it is even loosing far more.

But is it appropriate to say that there is any camera (system) being the killer of another one? I do not think so. The S System is interesting for certain aspects and areas of usage and for sure will arrive on a very high overall quality level, once Leica has managed to go through all the iterations which other vendors have already behind.

If Pentax is better? I would not expect that but maybe interesting for many users I think from the price point.

I have also heard $6,500 USD. That will rock the photo world~~~~!!! At least in my eyes it will!! Nothing will be in that price range, and in this economy, a sure sell among many pros!!! 30K for an S2 w Lens is hard to swallow for many of us who work hard and make money, but not enough to justify 30K!!!

This should send chills down the back of Leica. A Kodak CCD sensor, wow, I'm really intrigued.
