Hi,

I'm looking for a 35mm equivalent for a M8.2.

What ist your experience with the CV Ultron 28mm?

I am a litte bit lack of money - last week I bougt a 50mm Summicron. So the 28mm CV is the only lens I can afford in the next weeks and months.

Are the users of this lins happy with it? Does someone have 100% crops at f2?

Whats about focus shift??

thx and cheers

will

Ultron 28 at 1.9

Not a bad lens for it's price. Rather big so if you want to go smaller (but slower)

look at the CV 28 f 3.5

Love the CV 28/2 on the M8. It has its very own rendering, which is one of the reasons I use it alongside an Elmarit and a Summicron: wide open, it's a tad soft, primarily in the corners, with some vignetting and slightly muted colors, all of which create very atmospheric images IMO.

At f/4, it's tack sharp and pictures are difficult to distinguish from the above Leica lenses. Haven't noticed any focus shift on my copy.

One thing you should be aware of, though: CV lenses are known for sample variations, so you may want to check a few copies - if possible - before buying.

I'm not hugely technical but I've had mine for 7 months now and it's my favourite lens on the M8. Okay it's a bit more bulky but the images are, for me, fantastic.

I think this one was shot wide open at 1.9.

I recently picked up the f1.9 version of the Ultron. Here is a shot w/o coding or UV/IR filter on my M8

What ist your experience with the CV Ultron 28mm?

Mixed! It's a fantastic lens when shot wide open. But...

Whats about focus shift??

Yes, that's the problem. I just sold mine because of that.

This lens draws in a special way, with "extended DOF" due to spherical aberration. It gives the impression of larger DOF than you'd expect at f/2, but with a lovely transition from focus to out of focus and smooth bokeh. On the other hand, when you stop down, that extended DOF will narrow down more than expected, moving the plane of focus away from what you're aiming at. And it can be seen at large distances too, unfortunately.

I've said it before; I'd not choose this lens as an all purpose solution, but rather for low light and shooting wide open. If you want the best out of it when stopped down, you'll have to compensate for focus shift.

These are wide open on M8:

Do you find it necessary to add 6-bit coding to this lens (f1.9 version) to deal with corner vignetting and/or red shift when using a uv/ir filter?

Regards, Jim

Yes, I did. The same hold true for it's smaller brother, the 28 Color Skopar.

Here's a couple shots, one at around 2.8 indoors and one at f5.6 or f8 outside:

Dear SPO,

how can you open it up to 1,9 ? I think the max aperture is 2,0. ;)

Anyway, can someone take o photo of the Ultron with the M8.

It looks a little bit bulky.

It's bigger than a lot of RF lenses, but still smaller than the usual dSLR lens. I've got the LTM 28/1.9 version:

I can't say that I've had any problems with focus shift on my copy of this lens.

Here are 3 that I shot with the 28mm f1.9 without filter or coding. I had the filter on order and now have it, but I'm not sure that I'll use it. I'll probably try it both ways, but I sure like these

Maggie, did you perform any sharpening on these pictures?

I'm asking this because I've noticed that your Ultron pictures are a little bit sharper than the others. I have The M-mount f:2 version that is quite good on the M8 but I had the chance to try the LTM f:1.9 version like yours on my M8 and couldn't reach half your point of sharpness at all.

I can't explain this.

Those were processed with Capture One LE's standard sharpening settings, but nothing extraordinary. Maybe Cosina's infamous sample variation is to blame for your results?

Indeed, a star performer for few $$$....I only upgraded to the 'cron recently which, though a bit better is NO WAY $2000 better!....cv lenses are great value

X2!

I already had the CV 28/1.9 which was my normal lens on my R-D1S. When I made the move to the M8.2 I also planned to go with the 28 Summicron. It took me a few months to find the right one for me (translate as one that I could afford in an acceptable condition) and during that period I used the 28/1.9 extensively. Mine is an excellent performer with no suggestion of focus shift and plenty sharp at all apertures for my tastes. It is so good that even though I haven't used it in several months I prefer to leave it on a shelf rather than get rid of it. I have no complaints with the 28 Summicron either.
