The latter

I was in the street and shot a passer by. I just managed to get the side of his head when the shutter actually worked. I reckon there is about 1 second lag between clciking the shutter and it actually taking the shot..

Good, I was scared for a minute... with these types of cameras, you generally have to prefocus to avoid a huge shutter lag.

My 8 years old Digilux 1 takes from one to 2 seconds to focus and shoot.

Andy, how would you compare the X1 to your LC-5 as far as shutter lag?

Blimey. I haven't used the LC5 for years.

Suffice to say that the X1 isn't good.

I did a test whereby I stood in the dealer and looked at a cabinet. I took the photograph and turned at the same time. I'd turned through about 70 degrees before the image was recorded. Not very scientific, I know, but I do know that with either of my film Ms, or my D700 or the old CM, I'd have taken a shot of the cabinet, not out of the shop window.

For static shots, it was fine, of course.

I didn't get a chance to find the manual focus setting on the menu and the battery was running down, so my test with it was curtailed.

It struck me as very much a digital CM (especially as I was using an external viewfinder on it), but that lag really is a show stopper.

Maybe I am being dense here but a blindingly fast AF seems a bit much to expect & what I saw on a video (by Steve I think) it is fast enough for quasi-static stuff.

If you want to zone focus then instead of adjusting the focus via the wheel, which is slow apparently, I think you could auto focus on an suitably placed object and then switch to manual & adjust the aperture to the (hyperfocal) setting you want. This procedure takes some time obviously but could be rather intuitive and once it is set you can shoot much faster, even doing focus fine tuning if required.

So AF on an object at approx 5m, set to manual, aperture at f/8 and away you go.

I have just had a quick play with the X1 tonight and it is as fast as my D-lux 4 and quicker than my Digilux 2 in low light to focus I was also very pleased with the shutter lag after all the rumours going around it is faster than the D-lux 4.

After spending 2000 smackaroos for a point and shoot of course it is better to stay positive no matter what ........ the original poster here and Steve seem to have a fair overviews on using the X1, sorta not really happy but is willing to live with it view

Have you got an X1 stnami if not do not criticize someones opinion. What has the cost got to do with what I think of the camera I do not give a shit how much it cost I would always tell the truth as I see it. Also it cost me 1,320 smackaroos not 2000

Where do I get a smackaroos to US dollar converter?

:D :D :D

Well at least we can laugh while waiting for it.

Admittingly somewhat new to Leica digitals, having my M8 for just about a year, I don't think there is a more polarized camera maker. Some people sing praise of worship while others kick'em in the shin. The X1 threads can be exhausting, as much as I learn in the positive sense is evenly matched by negative opinions.

Inarguable that the camera has limitations.

Sean Reid pointed those out a couple of months ago while also effectively talking about the camera's strengths and demonstrating them.

A few pros are singing its praises and demonstrating its strengths, while also being honest about it's limitations.

The Panasonic G cameras have significant limitations too. I have one. I love it. But try using it with the Panny lenses zone focused. Or for large print quality shots at ISOs of above 800.

I have real problems with statements like the one I'm quoting.

I guess the inference is always "I personally don't think it's very good."

But it comes across as a definitive statement, one contradicted by other equally respectable users.

Oh yeh, I have one on order. I may find out that its limitations outweigh its strengths for me....or not. Ultimately that's the real test. For you Andy it was clearcut. I hope it is for me too. There's always eBay. Someone else will want it if I end up agreeing with you.;)

I know smackaroos are Dollars but I live in the U.K and we use the Pound not the Dollar.

Why would I get angry with your comments, I take them for what I think they are worth in my opinon nothing.

Sorry but the British empire went yonks ago so you and your pound are no longer the centre of the universe. Churches don't move so the X1 will be ok for you but watch the UK photo police they may be slow but faster than you can auto focus

Smackaroos are Aussie dollars and they're very jumpy. :D

Otherwise, try: XE - Universal Currency Converter

The X1 seems to weigh in at about a third more than the original Minilux film camera of 12 years ago or so. (2,000 Kiwi dollars for the Minilux then, 3,000 for the X1 now.) Considering the Minilux doesn't have a digital sensor, maybe the X1 is not that pricey (in Leica terms).

I tried a FW 1.0 one this lunchtime. The shutter lag is absolutely ridiculous and a real deal breaker for me. And, I'm not convinced that the files are 3x better than a D-Lux 4 at 1/3 the price.

This brief test has just made me more confused as to what the camera is actually all about.

Is it really shutter lag, or is it the time for the AF to lock focus. The two get often confused. If shutter lag was an issue on top of a sluggish Af, not even mf or zf would be fun.

According to Sean Reid (Reidreviews.com), if the X1 is displaying a review image when the shutter is pressed, its shutter lag increases by about one second!

X1 half press: .219 sec

X1 full press: .5 sec

X1 full press if previous image still displayed on LCD: 1.273 sec
