Zeiss 21/2.8 ZM on M9? Anyone?

I think the question that is still unanswered is how it does on an M9 for the "red edge" issue. We've seen a M8 shot, but that's never been an issue. Hank's shots are nice, but they aren't ideal for showing whether there might be a red edge or not.

What I would like to see is a shot of a cloudy sky or snow. Tom, living in Minneapolis, I assume that you would take some pictures with snow in them, so you would want to know before you bought the lens if this issue was present.

Hi there!

regarding this thread, I upload a pic of this combination (M8 & 21 2.8 Biogon) showing the answer to the red corner question. Important, best results coded as 21 2.8 ref 11134 - not 21 ASPH. Beside conversion from DNG, nothing has been done. The light dargended corners are caused by a UV Filter with a mount beeing a bit too deep....

Sorry...while reading this thread again, i just noticed that I wrote M8... indeed my sky sample was shot with an M9 - the 11134 coding is exact...

... so may be it works as answer....

Could you redo this test with focus to infinity and aperture wide open?

thx

That's probably no worse than a WATE at 21mm/f4. At 18mm/f4 for another thread, I was showing slightly more pink edge than that, so the 21 Biogon is at least as good in this respect as other 21 mm lenses.

On the M8 the best correction was coded as asph. Maybe we should try it out. I will do so, if it ever returns from repair. Apparently it imploded spontaneously, decentering itself so badly that it is virtually impossible to repair.:o

I used it on my M8 and saw no reason to change it for the M9 -- esp. since I have coded my CV 15mm as 21/2.8 non-ASPH and I like to be able to tell the files apart.

Or not. I and most others see NO red issues with the WATE.

Jeff,

I too thought my WATE had no red edge problem in real life until the snow arrived and then you could see it right away. Not disastrous and easily coped with either Corner Fix or a soft desaturation brush for the red channel in PS. I bet if you take a photo in even light of a pale surface, you fill find that you too have a small degree of left pink edge. I am sceptical of the perceived differences in M9's and Leica lenses (assuming they are in good adjustment and condition) to generate pink edges. I put the differences down to the way that photos are being taken and the lighting spectrum.

Not bad at all. Very similar to my 21/2.8 Elmarit ASPH.

Now that the new firmware does additional correction for the 21mm f/2.8 ASPH the results are no longer as good. I will switch coding to the non-ASPH 21mm f/2.8. That seems to get much better results.

ZM Biogon 21/2.8 @ 2.8 coded as Elmarit 21/2.8 11134, latest firmware.
