padraigm Posted January 29, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 29, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I know this has probably been discussed here and there before, but I am looking for some more up to date info. I am now in the market for a good tripod with a ball head. The $120 Silk one I purchased 2 years ago is falling apart and now I want to finally spring for a good one that will be dependable and last. I am looking for preferably one that has both the horizontal capability and a good ball head to go with it. Bottom line is I don't want to have to do this again in 2 years. My budget is ~$400. My question is to those who have purchased recently, or anyone who can recommended a good one withing that price range. There just seems to be so many choices. Oh carbon fiber would be my preference. Thanks in advance.

marban Posted January 29, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 29, 2010 i went for the gitzo GT1541T traveler 6X carbon together with the standard leica ball head and found it a great and light combo. used a novoflex ball at first but found it an overkill for the m8's weight. mstellato Posted January 29, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 29, 2010 Hi there, I'm in the same situation. Does anyone know anything about the Leica Trica tripod. Outside of the Leica website, there does not appear to be any reviews. maurizio

Michael M. Posted January 29, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 29, 2010 It's for sure: don't try to save big money on a tripot. You will regret later on. If I'm looking back on my Cullmann's, Bilora's, smaller Linhoff's ... they where gone without any tear in my eye. More sooner then later! But since about 25 years I'm with a (heavy) Gitzo ('Standard'?) and I'm very much confident, that it will stay additional 25 again - if not more. They are really made (where made? - how is it ourdays regarding reliability of Gitzo's?) for eternity. When I bought mine this time ago there was 10 year warranty on the tripot. A big yellow sticker telling proudly: "10 Jahre Garantie". Not necessarily to tell that even the sticker is fixed to the tripod's leg today like in the beginning .... ... a used one is still a good alternative ... check out ebay ... but don't care about weight - a good one has to be a heavy one. LeicaMSeattle Posted January 30, 2010 Share #6 Posted January 30, 2010 I would highly recommend the Gitzo G1198 Basalt series of tripod legs as it fits into almost any piece of luggage especially the small slingbag as I am showing. With any of these tripods, the head is sold separately. To travel as light as possible, I selected a ballhead by Manfrotto 484RC2 as I didn't feel the need to have to pan with a panhead with the M8. Guest PhotoWebb.co.uk Posted January 30, 2010 Share #7 Posted January 30, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The carbon Gitzo Traveler has never let me down - it's the perfect tripod for the M8 in my opinion. Get a decent Gitzo ballhead with QR though if you plan to use the tripod regularly and want to be able to remove the camera and put it on the tripod easily. padraigm Posted January 31, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted January 31, 2010 Hi all, thanks for the feedback. I am thinking at this point on getting an Induro carbon tripod the cx 214 perhaps.. I know its a cheaper one but I have read some good things. Then i can free up some money and get a really good ball head that will last. Thoughts? k-hawinkler Posted January 31, 2010 Share #9 Posted January 31, 2010 I recommend: Gitzo GT1541T Traveler 6X Carbon ( Load Capacity: 17.6 lbs (8kg) ) and RRS BH-30 Pro ( Load capacity: 15 pounds (6.8kg) ). They seem well matched. This combination can even support a Nikon D3 with 70-200mm f2.8 lens although the Gitzo GT3541XLS Systematic 6X Carbon ( Load Capacity: 39.7 lbs (18kg) ) and RRS BH-55 Pro ( Load capacity: 50 pounds (23kg) ) is my preferred setup for heavier loads. These 2 combinations complement each other well and serve all my tripod needs.
!Nomad64 Posted January 31, 2010 Share #10 Posted January 31, 2010 Manfrotto models aren't that bad either. But I must confess that since I'm using the M8 I almost quit the tripod. Camera's excellent balance, lack of mirror induced vibrations and a bean bag do the trick. Cheers, Bruno
Manolo Laguillo Posted January 31, 2010 Share #11 Posted January 31, 2010 I have the Carbonone 441 from Manfrotto, with the 460Mg head. The tripod itself is light and sturdy, with many nice details, and I like it very much. The head is correct, in its lightness, but not perfect... who is it? ldhrads Posted February 2, 2010 Share #13 Posted February 2, 2010 I recently bought a Benro Travel Angel Carbon, it's a clone of the Gitzo traveler, if you are looking at Induro, they are made by the same company. I took it all over even out in the -15F Canadian winter and it was a champ. Weighs in at less than 2 pounds and it's got plenty of oomph to handle a M8 or small DSLR

LuxBob Posted February 6, 2010 Share #15 Posted February 6, 2010 I came across Feisol, an Austrian manufacturer. They have a US base also besides selling on Ebay. I am thinking of one - similar quality to Gitzo but a bit easier on the pocket. FEISOL Tripod
