robofc Posted January 24, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 24, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) When I put in my first Sandisk SDHC 32GB 30mB/s card into the M9 it said, "no sd card." So I sent it back. Now I just received my second card and it says the same thing. I tried the card in a GF1 and X1 and it works in both. So is the issue with my M9 or do all M9s have a problem with the 32GB SDHC cards?
Advertisement Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Hi robofc, Take a look here Sandisk 32GB SDHC Extreme III cards are not working in my M9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
scc Posted January 24, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 24, 2010 Probably the latter.. The M9 is extremely picky with which card it will take. I'm using a Sandisk 16gb Extreme with no problems. The Extreme III as I understand it is an older card, and has been replaced by the Extreme series.
enboe Posted January 24, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 24, 2010 I have an M9 that is only happy with Delkin Efilm Class 6 cards. All others tried, including multiple models on the official list, glitch and fail to write images intermittently. When I queried the Leica rep for California, he said to wait for the new, imminent firmware. If the problem continued, then return the camera for repair. ho_co Posted January 24, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 24, 2010 rob, I'm sure you've checked the downloadable (see Leica Camera AG - Downloads) M9 FAQ for the list of currently recommended cards. Just for comparison's sake, you might want to try one or another of the recommended ones while awaiting the firmware update.
doublep Posted January 24, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 24, 2010 Sorry about your problem - for what it's worth, I am currently using a Sandisk 32GB Ultra card in my M9 with no issues.
scott kirkpatrick Posted January 24, 2010 Share #6 Posted January 24, 2010 There have been a few complaints that sounded to me as if some M9s have loose contacts to the SD card. Does your M9 work fine with other SDHC cards of this size and/or speed? scott
LondonM Posted January 24, 2010 Share #7 Posted January 24, 2010 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I had trouble with the 32Gb Extreme III as well. No trouble with the Extreme III 4 Gb (30Mb/s card). Go figure. Edited January 24, 2010 by LondonM
gravastar Posted January 24, 2010 Share #8 Posted January 24, 2010 (edited) Have you tried formatting the card in a computer first and then trying it in the camera? I have two Sandisk Extreme Class 10 8GB cards which behaved the same way as yours when they were new. The camera couldn't see the cards but they would work in a Canon 1D3. After formatting in an external card reader with Windows XP they have been flawless in the M9 and M8 and have formatted in the camera ever since. Bob. robofc Posted January 24, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted January 24, 2010 Hi, I tried formatted them on my computer and in both the X1 and GF1 and it still doesn't work. The M9 needs at least 32 GB cards with uncompressed raw files. I hope Leica will upgrade the firmware to handle the SDXC cards with 64GB. Ed_K Posted January 25, 2010 Share #10 Posted January 25, 2010 Uh robofc, could you share with us why you mention the M9 needs at least 32gb card please? I look up the M9 catalogue which estimate an uncompressed DNG file will take roughly 36mb, so even a 8gb card will have the potential to hold at least 200 DNG files, good enough for a few hours shooting ... true? robofc Posted January 25, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted January 25, 2010 8 gig cards were ok with the m8, but m9 files are 4x larger and so I think 32GB is an adequate size. I don't like having to swap cards while shooting. It is far better to have too much storage than too little. Or have you never had to miss shots while deleting from your card? A card should last at least as long as the battery, and because the M9 battery doesn't last that long, I would like the card to last 2 batteries. jaapv Posted January 25, 2010 Share #12 Posted January 25, 2010 (edited) How much do you shoot?? A 32 Gb card has about 850 images capacity at uncompressed DNG! So the dog chews your card and you lose 850 images. Not a good deal imho. Edited January 25, 2010 by jaapv

Heh - of course his card would probably still be inside the M9 at the time, unlike a 4GB one which might well be in dog territory
jaapv Posted January 25, 2010 Share #14 Posted January 25, 2010 Just an example. In my experience SD cards lead a dangerous life. I have had none chewed yet, but one or two managed to die of their own accord, others seem to have an irresistable attraction for hotel room cleaners, they are small enough to get lost in pockets - etc... Nicoleica Posted January 25, 2010 Share #15 Posted January 25, 2010 Just to put things into perspective. A 32GB card is the equivalent of 24 rolls of film. Or over 14 hours of taking 1 picture a minute without a break. That's an awful lot of photographs in one small space.
brainiac37 Posted January 25, 2010 Share #16 Posted January 25, 2010 There's been a lot of misguided information and attempts at helping M9 owners who have SD card issues. (No offense). Do a search on this subject and you'll find some threads on this. People telling you to use brand X, people telling you that your card is bad. People telling you to reformat in a PC, on and on, etc. The comments that I personally find the most unhelpful are "Works in my M9" and "Why are you buying from store X? Don't be cheap." Again, no offense, but it's frustrating when there are clearly problems with some units. It's got very little to do with what cards those owners are using. Bottom line is, Leica is being mum on this subject. The "imminent" firmware upgrade -- if it is indeed imminent -- may or may not fix it. Being a firmware engineer, I know that many hardware-like problems are really just firmware problems. However, we won't know until it's released. Unfortunately, in the meantime, we have to either wait for it or just send it in for repairs. Neither is a desirable option. Ugh. I wish Leica would deal with it better by at least saying something publicly. It's been really disappointing.
robofc Posted January 25, 2010 Author Share #17 Posted January 25, 2010 I have lost SD cards, but have never had one break while it is in the camera. The less often I have to change cards, the better. Professional photographers shoot thousands of shots per story, and often in a compressed period of time. You may wish to have your irreplaceable images rattling around your camera bag or lost between cushions, but I prefer one or two cards to keep track of. Ed_K Posted January 26, 2010 Share #18 Posted January 26, 2010 Thank you for sharing the idea, robofc. Unfortunately i had a bad experience way back when the sd card inside my P&S decided to die on me, right in the middle of my vacation. Imagine half a day shooting all gone to "dust" because of card failure, from then onward i scale down to smaller size and bring backups instead of relying on one, especially on vacation. vish Posted January 26, 2010 Share #19 Posted January 26, 2010 Hmmm... My M9 is due back from repair tomorrow, and I have a fresh 32GB Ultra II card for it - hoping it works. Didn't see the need to put anything faster in (obviously, the benefit is at the transfer end, but still). Anyone tried an Ultra II. Else I'll let you know tomorrow
Guest trond Posted January 26, 2010 Share #20 Posted January 26, 2010 I am using two SanDisk 32GB Ultra II in my M9. They work just great, no problems. I have also tried a SanDisk Extreme III 8GB card, which also works fine in the M9. Best regards Trond
