Mac22 Posted January 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi All, Recently joined on the back of losing a last second Ebay bid on a Digilux 2. I have a Nikon D80 with various lenses that I use mainly for work.(insurance surveys) The Nikon is a soulless camera and for some reason I must have a Leica. It must be an age related type of thing... So, I have a challenge ahead of me. Try and find a Digilux 2 in mint condition and for the right price. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to joining the Leica family properly in the next few weeks...... Regards Mac.....

Digitom Posted January 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 22, 2010 Hi Mac, Welcome to the forum! Hi All,Recently joined on the back of losing a last second Ebay bid on a Digilux 2. Good choice to buy a Digilux 2. Maybe you lost because many people these days have made that good decision too Just try to bid your maximum and add maybe 10 to 15 percent to that price limit. If you loose then, you are happy (save so much money that time). If you win, you will be much more happy I have a Nikon D80 with various lenses that I use mainly for work.(insurance surveys) The Nikon is a soulless camera and for some reason I must have a Leica. It must be an age related type of thing... Well, maybe not an age related but a thing of experience and expectation. When one begin to do something finally the demand for better things grow, and the track leads to some special things which are then "necessary". Your final thing in photography is the "must have of a Leica". After being satisfied with a Digilux 2, one day you will end up with an M9 I have not done the final step now (I own a Digilux 2 and a D-Lux 2), but just right now I begin to lok for these many -relatively- "cheap" M8 you can get at ebay... So, I have a challenge ahead of me. Try and find a Digilux 2 in mint condition and for the right price. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I think it is a good choice to look at ebay. Or going to a seller (Leica seller?) in your area which may have sometimes well checked 2nd hand cameras. But Digilux 2 is there very hard to find. Looking forward to joining the Leica family properly in the next few weeks...... Regards Mac..... Hope so, have a good time! Thomas
carlosecpf Posted January 22, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 22, 2010 Hi Mac, Welcome to the forum! You should visit Thorsten Overgaard's website to get more info on the Digilux 2. He even mention there some good places to find this camera. leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Sites - Leica Digilux 2 sample photos and tests (as well as Panasonic DMC-LC1) - Page 1 of 3 Even though the D2 prices are pretty high right now on eBay, it is possible to find good bargains out there. Yesterday I bought my 3rd D2 for $520. I just could not pass on this deal. Another cheaper alternative, is to buy an used Lumix LC-1 which is basically the same camera as the D2. I have one also and cannot tell the difference (after tweaking some settings) on their jpeg output. As pointed by other forum members, you should find alternative channels to get this amazing camera (like craigslist) at a reasonable price point. Good luck! Best, Carlos

AlbertoDeRoma Posted January 23, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 23, 2010 Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to joining the Leica family properly in the next few weeks...... Regards Mac..... Where do you live Mac? Do you have a relatively active craigslist in your area? Where I live, San Francisco Bay Area, a "WTB" (i.e. Want To Buy) ad on craigslist scored me 2 of my 3 D2s. The other one was in response to a "sell" ad on craigslist. Mac22 Posted January 23, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted January 23, 2010 Cheers Alberto. I live in the NW of England..... Just had a look around Craiglist, nothing doing there... Mac....
fotmaesron Posted January 23, 2010 Share #7 Posted January 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Beware of the panasonic version, it is the same camera, same results, but misses the soul... On ebay you have to place your max bid higher, there is the posibility that you overpaid it, but at least you will have one ... Once you hold that camera it dosnt bother you what you paid for it, you love it, Ronny
farnz Posted January 23, 2010 Share #8 Posted January 23, 2010 Cheers Alberto.I live in the NW of England..... Just had a look around Craiglist, nothing doing there... Mac.... Mac, You might like to have a look at Gumtree (Jobs, Cars, Property, Free Classifieds and More - Gumtree.com), which is similar to Craigslist and you can filter by area. I bought a mint version IV 35/2 Summicron for a very reasonable price through Gumtree. As you'd expect there's a bit of hookey gear and a few dodgy dealers but as long as you're careful to see the goods before handing over any money in a populated public place there shouldn't be a problem. nigelb Posted January 23, 2010 Share #9 Posted January 23, 2010 Hi All,Recently joined on the back of losing a last second Ebay bid on a Digilux 2. So, I have a challenge ahead of me. Try and find a Digilux 2 in mint condition and for the right price. Looking forward to joining the Leica family properly in the next few weeks...... Regards Mac..... Mac I'm sorry but that may possibly have been me if it was last Sunday . A last minute bid (for £701) over my original budget got it for me. Thing is if we really, really want one of these, and this one is an absolute minter - just like new, then we have to pay for it - thoughts of getting a bargain or cheapie don't matter any more and it is determined people like me with the help of the adulation on this forum that is pushing prices up. Sorry guys! I am over the moon with mine, so to me it was worth it. Another one went a couple of days later for £450, not such a minter, but much cheaper for the sake of a couple of scratches, so you can get a better deal if you wait and place bids on every one that comes up. Good luck in your quest, hope you'll be as happy as I am soon. Nigel
Mac22 Posted January 23, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted January 23, 2010 Nigel, It was the £450 one I was bidding on and I mean it went to the last second.... There is another one on (Joan) and asked her for a "buy it now" price. She has said £670, due to one going earlier in the week for £700 odd.. come to think of it it was YOU!!!!! Nigel, you have a lot to answer for....... God I hate Ebay... Mac..
Mac22 Posted January 24, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted January 24, 2010 Hi Guys, Now, this is starting to become an obsession..... I am now trawling through Ebay sites worldwide..... I am speaking to sellers in California, Sydney and Holland. I WILL get my Digilux 2 if it kills me....but it's more likely the Missus will do that for me first... lesh Posted January 24, 2010 Share #12 Posted January 24, 2010 Don't let your determination to get hold of a D2 blind you to the risks when dealing with a distant seller. Unfortunately not all D2 owners are like the friendly inhabitants of this forum. Good luck in your search.
AlbertoDeRoma Posted January 24, 2010 Share #13 Posted January 24, 2010 Don't let your determination to get hold of a D2 blind you to the risks when dealing with a distant seller.Unfortunately not all D2 owners are like the friendly inhabitants of this forum. Good luck in your search. Agreed. Deal only with people with good feedback (there was a great looking D2 recently but from a seller with zero feedback.) I also recommend paying with PayPal to protect yourself. Finally, wherever you live, I am sure that there's a craigslist equivalent. Be proactive and create listings/ads "Want to Buy Leica Digilux 2 - local deal only." Practice care in these transactions as well. I look forward to you joining us little group of fanatics soon :-). farnz Posted January 24, 2010 Share #14 Posted January 24, 2010 Another trick is to ask if you can pick the camera up in person in a mutually agreeable, populated public place and pay in cash even if you don't intend to. If the seller says no then it's a fair sign that all may not be what it seems and you should be wary. Pete.

elansprint72 Posted January 24, 2010 Share #16 Posted January 24, 2010 Mac, Welcome to the forum. Thanks to the idiots here, who have been singing the praises of the D2, prices have gone upwards. I've been saying that this is a crap, obsolete camera with only 5mp, for ages, but would they listen? Give David Stephens a ring (he is in the centre of Manchester), if he does not have a decent D2 in stock, he will find one for you and you may be surprised by the price, he is very fair. Don't forget to mention the forum. Maybe see you at one of our NW England walkabouts? http://www.stephensphotocentre.co.uk/
Mac22 Posted January 24, 2010 Author Share #17 Posted January 24, 2010 I was up very early this morning (Before the kids got up) and spent four hours on line with not much luck... The link to Stevens looks a winner and only half an hour drive away, his phone will be ringing at 08:59 tomorrow... Played golf this afternoon and walking around the course, I was thinking, oh that would make a good shot and Mmmm that would be an interesting angle....Played crap as well... Thanks for all your help........ Mac..
Mac22 Posted January 25, 2010 Author Share #18 Posted January 25, 2010 Success..... Thanks to all involed, I will return when it arrives to find out how to use it... It's a bit more "hands on" than a D80 in full auto.... Cheers again.. Mac....
