wlaidlaw Posted January 21, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I want to put a UV/IR filter on my Elmar 65 when used with a Viso III and M8, for colour correction taking archival photographs of old documents. Like many of us now, I have a bag full of UV/IR filters in various sizes, from lenses that used to be used on my M8 and are not now needed for the same lenses on my M9. I thought I had measured the filter thread correctly at 40.5mm, a common Leica thread size and ordered a 40.5 to 46 step up ring. This ring is very loose in the Elmar thread and I fear that it is a 41mm thread size - pretty unusual. Anyone got any thoughts. I am just glad I did not order a 40.5mm B+W 486 filter! Advertisement Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Hi wlaidlaw, Take a look here What filter size for Elmar 65/3.5?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wlaidlaw Posted January 21, 2010 Author Share #2 Posted January 21, 2010 I have found the answer on RFF. It is a 41mm thread but no info as to whether it is 0.5mm or 0.75mm pitch. As Leica use 0.5mm pitch for 43mm filters, I am guessing it will be 0.5mm. I have found that Ace Cameras sell via Amazon US a 41mm (pitch not stated) to 49mm ring. I have had one sent to my daughter in Baltimore, where my wife is going at the end of this week. I have two now unused 49mm UV/IR filters, a Leica one and a B+W one plus somewhere the filter ring I took the glass from for my JM adapter for the WATE and the WATE filter, so no shortage. I suppose I could avoid all this by using the M9 but the Visoflex is a virtually permanent fixture on my M8, especially with its new super bright Nikon F301 screen with split image. giordano Posted January 21, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 21, 2010 FWIW the 1975 "General Catalogue" says that from serial number 2 378 901 the 65mm Elmar takes a Series 6 filter. One could always mount a UV/IR filter inside the Visoflex, inside or in front of the bayonet flange that goes into the camera. As long as it didn't screw up the focusing or cause too much vigneting it would make it a great deal simpler to use big old lenses on the M8.

I certainly don't want to buy a 58mm filter for my 280 Telyt or goodness knows what size the 560 Telyt, that I am currently negotiating on, takes. If I get it, it may be interesting to take in my hand luggage, as with the pistol grip, it probably looks like a rocket launcher on X-ray. Hi Wilson, Is that one of the Telyts that breaks down for transport? I once had a 400mm f/5.6 Novoflex in a collapsible mount with folding shoulder stock, which raised suspicions even in those innocent days when hijackers only wanted to go to Cuba. John, I think the tube splits in two for transport. I am trying to get a clear answer as to whether the pistol grip is present and the special notched LTM to LM adapter but maybe due to language differences, getting wooly answers. UliWer Posted January 21, 2010 Share #8 Posted January 21, 2010 I got the Series VI Uv/IR from B&W. They produce it on demand. The adapter Leica-No.14160 may be more difficult to find.
wlaidlaw Posted January 21, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted January 21, 2010 Thanks guys. A post on the RFF thread said that when the OP was unable to source a Series VI adapter, he used a 41 to 49 mm step up ring successfully. In that this is pretty cheap ($10), it is worth giving this a go, especially as I have so many spare 49mm UV IR filters. My 40.5 to 46mm step ring feels like there is about .5mm of play. Wilson Telyt 560 (and 400) does not use not front filters: filters stay into a proper receptacle along the lens tube: serie VII. I hope you find a fine item : expecially the 5,6 version is really a nice lens (a bit easier to storage and carry than the 6,8, dismounts in 3 instead of 2 pieces)

Pity, as it looks brand new and unused. I will have to get back to looking. I am not interested in the 400, as I already have the 280. Wilson

wlaidlaw Posted February 4, 2010 Author Share #16 Posted February 4, 2010 William when you eventually identify the correct filter size and thread could you let us know as I have the same lens and same problem......many thanks.regards I have just got a Cokin R4149 (e41 to e49) step ring and it is perfect fit on my series one Elmar 65. It means I can use one of the superfluous 49mm UV/IR filters sitting in one of my photo drawers. Now all I need to find is a Series VII UV/IR filter at a reasonable price for the Televit/560 Telyt combo. I thought the glass was the same as an e49 as the filters have the same outside diameter but no such luck. The filter ring of the Series VII is very thin and an e49 glass drops straight through.
