Working and living in the small old city called Lemberg. UNESCO-World Heritage and host of the coming European Soccer Championships in 2012... Anyway, does anyone have experiences with the area in terms of safety for my M8 plus equipment? Would you walk around with your equipment, or would you disguise the M8, like some in the forum do it? Is there any good (German) theft insurance for the equipment? M8 plus WATE, plus 35mm Nokton plus Noctilux...? Any experience - any comments? markgay Posted January 18, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 18, 2010 Falk, I have been happily using the same equipment (bar the Nokton) in Moscow (and on trips to Kiev) since the M8 was first released. Perfectly safe. And in Ukraine and Russia, your M8/9 is already disguised... It looks just like a decades old Fed or Zorki, both of which are still widely used. I used my Leica-equipment several times there without any hassle. I was traveling with a local friend visiting her friends in various small suburban areas. I did get myself to some tricky situations, as once, a very sweet group of little street kids were pretending they wanted me to take their photo until I noticed one was approaching me from behind holding a stone... (that was in the beautiful Arcadia beach). On the other hand, I did ignore all tourist advice and used the camera in very exposed situations with no problem. The situation in the suburbs is difficult, and there is deep poverty, but it is nothing like it was in the 90ies. manatee Posted January 18, 2010 Share #8 Posted January 18, 2010 Falk, I travelled through Ukraine and the DonBass area in particular in 2008 without any problems. I carried my bulky 5D + lenses. Shot in hospital, mines etc. I plan to go back next year and will certainly bring my M8 and lenses with confidence. Use commmon sense and treat people with respect and dignity - like anywhere else in the world, and you will have no problems. Don't advertise computer and photogear in your room though.... Falk Beijing In my experience the Ukraine is no better or worse than most European countries (except maybe the corruption - everyone has to be on their toes). That said, I suspect I'd be more wary in London than in Kiev! The old city is of course, very famous and photogenic, but a lot of the newer parts are no less interesting, albeit for different reasons. I've never been to Lemberg, but it looks very interesting and you'll be very close to the Polish border if ever you need a change of scene! The Ukrainian countryside I've visited is deeply rural, rolling and verdant - plenty of opportunities for using your Leica stuff. The people are great (be that in terms of photographic subjects or quite simply, as intelligent, fascinating and sociable people with a huge cultural legacy).
