D Lux 4 Firmware 2.2 Update

Recommended Posts

This is the second firmware up-date that I have loaded onto my D-Lux-4.

The pdf installation instructions do leave a little to be desired I must admit. The following might help:

Format your SD card in DL4 camera

Put SD card in card reader attached to computer

Copy unzipped update file to the drive shown on your computer screen, NOT either of the two folders on the card as a result of the formatting process.

The instructions state that you should then place SD card back into the DL4, switch on in playback mode but I found that mine only worked in record mode!! Bingo, it all happens then as per instructions....easier to do than write about it actually!

A fantastic update and well worth persevering.

Good luck.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi, this is my first post and my first Leica. I've been a Canon SLR person all my life, but wanted a smaller camera that I could keep with me all the time. Until now, all the "point and shoot" cameras I've bought, and there have been many, have been very disappointing. Even though they were smaller than my SLR, I never actually used them because the results were so poor. So far, I'm thrilled with the D Lux 4!

However... I've found the manual to be very frustrating (I've ordered the book but it hasn't arrived yet) and I'm having just as much trouble with this firmware update. I followed the directions, formatted a (brand new) card in-camera, dL'd and unzipped the update onto the card, and put the card in the camera. I've tried the review setting, and it only tells me that there are no images on the card. I've tried the record setting and it doesn't say anything... just looks like it's ready to take pictures. (and yes, I checked that the files actually are on the card, and not in either folder)

Anyone have any words of advice? I love the camera as it stands now, but it does sound like the firmware update is worth getting in there!

TIA!

Found the problem! I was reading back through the older messages on the forum and found one mentioning that the battery needed to be fully charged. Mine wasn't empty, but I had not just charged it either. I switched to a freshly charged battery and the upgrade went right through. Would have been nice if there had been some more useful message from teh camera than "No valid picture to play"!

This same message came on after the upgrade completed. The only way I could tell right off that the upgrade had worked was that when I turned it on in picture taking mode and forgot to remove the lens cap, the message had changed from pressing the > button to pressing any button.

Hope that by posting this up closer to the top of the forum it will help some other newbie!

Anyone have any problems in following the instructions from Leica for loading the update onto the camera? Thanks.

I had problems initially, loading it into the SD card (I'm on a Mac os x 10.6) but I then ignored the instructions about root folder and just dragged the file onto the card image and it loaded OK.

Yes, I put it in play back before turning it on. It says"No valid picture to play".

And, no, the file is not inside one of the folders on the card.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Yes, put it in the play mode BEFORE turning the camera on. The battery also needs to be fully charged and the unzipped BIN file needs to be put NOT into any of the two folders on the card. It's also important to format the card in the camera beforehand, don't format it on a computer. Follow this and it should work, it did for me and took just a few seconds. I doublechecked the version on the camera and it said 2.2. Bingo!

:confused:just downloaded the 2.2 firmware update and unzipped it , it says the file is 5,954 kb

then I read this in the instructions

"3. The file size for DLX4_220.BIN should be 6.096.384 Bytes.

If the file size is not the same, please download and double click the file again. The file size can be checked

by right-clicking on the file and selecting properties."

I have downloaded and unzipped it several times but still get a file size of 5,954 kb.

is this ok should I go ahead or not?

While I can´t be certain, the difference is very close to the difference between two different definitions of what the "k" in kb should mean. The "correct" definition, of course, is that the prefix k stands for one thousand, just as for all other units of measuring. Only, some geeky person has found it more convenient to let k stand for 2^10 = 1024 when talking in binary terms, and this use is now rather common...

And, indeed, 6,096384 divided by 1.024 is 5,953500..... Since 5.954 is likely a rounded-off value, at least the result isn´t incompatible with my conjecture....

After following the instructions carefully and copying the extracted "DLX4_220.BIN" to a camera-formatted card; turning the camera on in playback mode using a freshly charged battery, the initial result was a "card error" message.

I rechecked the card to make sure it was copied (it was), and re-inserted card and turned camera back on and it went right through!

Can't explain what happened but it worked.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.... I had difficulty updating the firmware but after doing what you said to do, it worked..... wonderful....cheers,

The 2.2 firmware just fix a bug in french language in the 2.1 firmware. Nothing more than the 2.1.

I guess that you didn't read the installation notes then? If you do, you'll see that there's a little bit more than that. :)
