IUFOO / 12575 lens hood modification?

Looking the interior of a recently acquired IUFOO lens hood I see that the flared section has a grooved surface similar to that of the IROOA, but the outer parallel section seems to be lined with black felt. Is this normal, or is it a modification by an earlier owner?

Best regards,

Doug

That could be normal. The black felt lining was also used with hoods that could be fitted onto the lens in a reverse fashion, in order to protect the lens barrel from scratching.

The purple felt Luigi is refering to was IMHO only used on lens caps, on the inner side of them to be precise.

Uh.. right... you had me reminding that probably my Summarit rectangular hood has black felt... I'll check my reversible hood for Summilux 50... ;)... seem to remember it hasn't it...

If it may be of help, I have a final version all black IUFOO, that is, no chrome banding, as would be found on the first and second variation IUFOOs. It does not have a felt strip. My hood is marked "Leica M 1:4/135" with no reference being made to the 90 mm lens, as the earlier versions had.

Thanks for the replies. So it seems that the felt is original.

I’d dug the hood out of a ‘spares’ box because I’m considering getting a lighter-weight 39mm-front alternative to my ‘heavy’ 90mm Summicron in order to reduce the weight of my camera bag. For the moment, my ‘light’ 90mm lens is an f2 Jupiter-9, but I’m considering an f2.8 Elmarit or Tele-Elmarit.

The Jupiter is in the same weight class as the Elmarit and Tele-Elmarit, and is a fairly good but erratic performer. For much of the time it gives nice sharp high-contrast images, but sometimes lets me down by producing washed-out low-contrast images. Surprisingly for a lens made in 1972, it is uncoated (as was the only other example from the same factory that I’ve seen.) So I’m guessing that the low-contrast images are the result of large-scale flare.

The occasional problems I’ve had with sharpness are probably DOF-related given that deteriorating eyesight sometimes makes using the rangefinder difficult.

Best regards,

Doug

If you look here: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.de/index.php/Gegenlichtblenden#IUFOO.2F12575_.281956.29

you see at least three different versions of the IUFOO/12575.

The oldest one with small chrome rim had the black felt at the inner front and at the back (towards the lens); the second version with broad chrome rim as well as my version of 12575 had it only on the front side. Maybe later versions of the 12575 had non at all.
