Advertisement Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 Hi freehander, Take a look here Holiday in NYC. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jsrockit Posted January 6, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 6, 2010 Try B&H, Adorama, and Photo Village. I'm not sure the X1 will be available though... there is most likely a waiting list at all of these.
freehander Posted January 6, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted January 6, 2010 a waitinglist? I can´t go in a shop and say: give me an X1?
timd. Posted January 6, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 6, 2010 no, you can't just go there and take an x1 home - those who already ordered it in last year's september will be served first. do yourself a favour and get your used m8 before you go - not only to hava someone to complain to in case of problems, but also because there is so much more interesting to do in nyc than desparately looking out for a camera that fits your needs and wallet. -tim-

There's no chance you can just "pick up" an X1 in NYC. Also the USD - Euro exchange is slightly countered by the adjusted prices starting Jan 1, 2010 (although this will have no effect on the purchasing of a used M8). Might as well get a used M8 with a 28 lens (~37mm equivalent on full frame). Which will be "comparable" to the X1's 36mm-equivalent lens. So instead of searching for an X1 (which will most definitely end in failure), pick up a M8 and shoot away. Just a few drops of my opinion.
jsrockit Posted January 6, 2010 Share #6 Posted January 6, 2010 There is nothing worng with waiting and buying a used M8 in NYC though... each store I mentioned always has them. Additionally, each store has Voigtlander, Leica, and Zeiss M Mount Lenses... as well as used ones, so you have a huge choice of lenses. It wouldn't take long to purchase a used M8 and lens in NYC. h00ligan Posted January 6, 2010 Share #7 Posted January 6, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Quick side note - Despite the great selection at B&H I always HATED going there due to the service or lack thereof. I generally found the workers to be extremely rude - at least to those outside their community (those who have been in person may better understand this). Ecaton Posted January 6, 2010 Share #8 Posted January 6, 2010 a waitinglist? I can´t go in a shop and say: give me an X1? Sure you can, and they will sell you one, provided it is in stock. Though availability of the X1 in February seems rather unlikely, and even if US dealers had received first shipments, units might be gone to those on waiting lists. As a second thought, you could try to buy a used M8 from a US based forum member whom you could meet in NYC for execution of the deal.
NZDavid Posted January 7, 2010 Share #9 Posted January 7, 2010 New York City is undoubtedly one of the world's great cities with enough to see and do to keep you flat out for several trips! I have been there just three times and haven't seen nearly enough. I have found The Photo Village and B&H Photo Video | Digital Cameras, Camcorders both excellent to deal with, at least on the internet. But when traveling it's sometimes hard to find time to visit photo stores, so buying online or from a local store would be worth considering.
Steve Ash Posted January 7, 2010 Share #10 Posted January 7, 2010 I doubt you will get both of them cheaper there. First all you have to pay VAT (MwSt) in NYC. If you return home and you intend not to ignore law customs duties apply. These are MwSt (VAT) plus import duties depending on the product you buy. If you import single items below a value of about 170EUR, import is completely free and worth to buy. You can find more details and the exact actual figures on the website of the "Zoll". I saved a lot of money buying studio gear in NY but I had to look at each single item and had to make the complete calculation in advance. For some items it was even cheaper to order from Germany and get them delivered as overweights cause extra costs when you check-in on your flight back. Regards Steve There is no VAT in the US, but state level sales tax. And depending on the business location(s) of the dealer, no sales tax is charged on shipments to out of state located customers. E.g. buying from Californian based Popflash for shipment to NYC (provided they ship to hotel addresses of visitors) does not trigger sales tax charges. peterb Posted January 7, 2010 Share #12 Posted January 7, 2010 At B&H (and Adorama) among the minions of sales people you're bound to find a few curmudgeons behind the counters but that's extremely rare. Most of those folks I've encountered have been nothing short of helpful and accommodating. Even during peak holiday periods. Have fun. If they have an X1 for sale and it's available pre-orders or not you'll walk out with one. (With people either envious or in total shock right behind you.) peterb Posted January 7, 2010 Share #13 Posted January 7, 2010 NY and NYC BOTH have sales taxes. But considering the fact that you're willing to part with $2K on a P/S, is that really a consideration?

grober Posted January 7, 2010 Share #15 Posted January 7, 2010 When in NYC, please buy a NEW M8.2 with multiple Leica lenses so that the company will stay alive long enough for me to get my already-ordered X1 (w/accessories!) -g

peterb Posted January 7, 2010 Share #17 Posted January 7, 2010 JSRockitt: no they'll honor pre-orders the first day they arrive. After that if anyone who walks in and wants an X1 will get it if they're in stock. They're a huge buyer of Leica goods. Edward: Sorry to hear you met so many curmudgeon suckwads. All my encounters have been great.
h00ligan Posted January 7, 2010 Share #18 Posted January 7, 2010 Well a lot of it had to do with the culture, and inherent sexism as well.

Oh, I see... we are on the same page... you mean once their pre orders are filled. I'm assuming they will not be able to fill all of their preorders initially...that is what I meant. cheewai_m6 Posted January 11, 2010 Share #20 Posted January 11, 2010 my opinion is not to touch an m8. 2 problems 1. price, even thought you can buy them relatively cheaply, they're still thousands of dollars. assuming you already have m lenses, you will need to buy ir filters for every lense, or you can swap ir filter for whichever lens you're using. if you don't have m lenses, they're not cheap to buy, which is ok if you're going to buy an m9 in the future, but what will you do with the ir filters once you get the m9? most likely sell them. 2. not full frame, instead of buying having a 35mm lens, you've got a 47mm lens (approx). instead of having a 50mm lens, you have a 66mm lens. ok, so you use 35mm as a 50mm lens. what happens if/when you buy an m9. you have to buy a 50mm lens for that focal length. basically, all the rubbish of not using a lens for its designed focal length. plus, you're paying a lot of money for an out of date camera. m8 just does not appeal to me at all. it might appeal to you, but these are my views.
