M9: Still Another Problem

Now I've hit the point of exasperation! I had the following problems, about which I've written in another thread that I started yesterday:

—my camera came with a cracked sensor cover glass, with which Leica dealt quickly;

—the LEDs for the exposure meter in the viewfinder are not bright enough to be visible whenever when the light here in Thailand is bright, which is often; and I still don't know whether this is only a problem with my particular M9 or a general problem; but the LEDs in my M6 are much brighter, say, by a factor of ten times; and

—my Summilux-50 (pre-ASPH) does not always bring up the correct frame lines, and when it does, they're a bit thin and there are spurious parts of other frame lines showing. Leica have said that there is some "mis-match" with my particular lens and my M9 that they will have to adjust, although there is no focus issue. None of my other lenses has this problem; and when I tried a friend's version of the same lens there was no problem either.

Today, I went out shooting and when I came back found two types of rectangles in 15 frames, as you can see in the two pictures below. After that, the rectangles didn't appear again. Actually, yesterday the same rectangle (the larger one) appeared in three shots and then didn't reoccur until today,

Has anyone come across something like this, or know what the problem might be?

I'm writing about this to Leica, but I must say that I don't want, or have the time, to make a career of getting this camera to work properly. I'm going to put it aside and see what solution Leica will propose.

No, the cracked glass artifacts in the pictures appeared in the very first frame I shot when I received the camera from the store. I had only shot about a dozen pictures when I sent the camera back. These rectangles started appearing, yesterday, after I had shot some 450 frames.

Mitch - bummer. Who did you buy this from? REPLACEMENT IMMEDIATELY looks like the best solution. This shouldn't happen ... possible that the camera was dropped / damaged in transport? With these symptoms it looks like there's damage to a circuit board... :(

Chris:

I bought from a dealer in Europe and left the next day for Bangkok, and sent the camera back to Leica through the dealer here in Thailand, but had to pay US$100 handling cost, which, as a matter of principle, I'm not willing to pay again.

I certainly haven't dropped the camera, and doubt that it was damaged in transport from Solms because it worked fine for some 440 shots before this rectangle problem occurred.

Mitch,

This sounds like a "Friday" M9 and I am sure it would be best to let it become someone else's problem. I agree with KM, a new replacement is called for. When you disassemble something as complicated and technology dense as an M9, I suspect there is a serious risk of introducing a new fault, when you are mending the initial one.

A friend of mine who used to work for the UK Ministry of Defence, was asked to investigate why Army vehicles, including ordinary staff cars, were so dramatically less reliable that their civilian equivalents. The answer was very simple - they were being serviced to death. While chauffeurs and drivers were hanging around (army motto - hurry up and wait), they were always fiddling about under the hood. When the memo went out that nobody was to touch the mechanics of the vehicles, except at scheduled servicing, they became hugely more reliable.

The same for an M9 - the more often it is taken apart, the less reliable it will be.

I know exactly how you feel, since I've sent my M8 four times for different errors.

Four times 100US, four times 20 days of waiting in two years seems a lot, compared to some other cameras I own, which had nothing to repair.

But the point is that they will eventually fix it (or replace), and after that it will work flawlessly- one advice- if a camera has more than one flaw, they tend to repair only one and return it. I seriously doubt that they examine everything as they say.

Check twice by email that everything will be fixed.

Does anyone have any idea on this bizarre rectangle issue?

No other M9 (or M8?) owner that I know of has reported such a result (4,000 M9 estimated delivered thus far)

AFAIK no-one else is reporting this viewfinder brightness 'ten times less than an M6' either?

The lens /frame problem appears specific to that one individual lens rather than the camera , based on this report?

I waited a year into production before buying the M8 which I still use without ANY problems at all. My assumption here is and the lesson, it would be more prudent to wait into the production for a new camera than to be the first on the block to have one. By waiting, issues like these tend to not happen as much, and one also has the ability to take advantages of later and more updated technology and firmware (I am also holding out with the hope Leica will come to its senses and start chroming these beasts again. For $7,000 there is NO EXCUSE for not having REAL CHROME as a choice - My Chrome M8 still looks like NEW, no brassing!).

Well, my problems have not been cosmetics...but, hey, thanks for the lesson — I would have have though of such an esoteric as not being an early buyer if you hadn't raised. But if everyone decided to buy a year after the cameras introduction, the cost would be over $8,000, but you would be getting the right vintage then. Sorry, for the sarcasm but I really your smug post deserves it.

Mitch,

I'd suggest trying new SD cards (or re-format the ones you've got) this looks similar to a problem I had (see this thread). In my case, the left and right areas were filled with errored data. My camera went back to Leica who checked it out and simply said "use better cards" (not a reassuring diagnosis) but I've not seen an issue since the camera came back.

(EDIT -- I wrote too soon, just reviewed my christmas photos and 2 of 70 from Xmas day show the same problem I had before (massive failure to write correct data to the DNG file covering approximately the same area as the dark ones in Mitch's second image above.).

In general, I do not take a new camera with me in an expensive trip until I can confirm it's working properly for, at least, 2-3 weeks of intense use, bearing in mind that there are trips that cost more than the camera in terms of money and time planning it.

Maybe it's one of the prototypes and is worth it's wait in gold...

No wait, it's worth a lot more, gold is cheap now isn't it?

Mitch,

Sorry for your problem !

Agree with Carlmuck

Try a new SDHC card to see

I always use Sandisk Extreme III 4 Gb 30 mb / s or 20 Mb / s

Otherwise it's still strange and curious especially with a new sensor

it happens with all pictures or just some ?

For what it's worth, the problem area's in Mitch's 2nd photo and Carlmuck's photos seem to align vertically, even though they look different. This suggests there is some connection, but I don't know what it could be.

Mitch's look dark, whereas Carlmuck's look like an electronic pattern. When I superimposed alignment lines over the problem areas in Photoshop, the vertical lines align perfectly (while the horizontals vary). The vertical lines seem to fall at 5/18ths and 13/18ths of the image. So, for example, if each image is resized to 1800 pixels wide, the left line will fall at 500 pixels from the left edge and the right line will fall at 1300 pixels from the left edge.
