Leica Digilux 2 vs RD-1 ?

If anyone has compared these I would like to hear what you think.

It's a tough comparison. Probably because they are both neat cameras with quirks of their own.

I'm a fanatic for the Digilux 2. Period. End of story. Absolutely my favorite camera.

Prior, I tried a friends RD-1 - I wear glasses.. the manual focus was brutal for me. Originally, I thought the film advance lever would be a cool retro feature. It was a TOTAL pain in the ass. Maybe you'd get used to it... but it was a drag.

Ergonomically, not great. A little hard and edgy feeling in my hands. Images (when focused) where superb.

Lastly, the lens on the Digilux 2 is a perfect match... and you remove that quandary from the puzzle. With the RD-1, you're back in the equipment game, mixing and matching and carrying around multiple lenses. That isn't what I wanted to do. I have Canons for that. :)

In the end, the Digilux 2 gives me the "feel" I wanted, the state of mind I wanted and beautiful, beautiful images.

Have an LC-1, had an RD-1s for a short while.

Love the first, hated the second. Mostly it was about the shape and feel of the body, which I found awkward in the hand. I disliked the "tall" Voigtlander body - something that I found I had the same issue with on the film bodies. My LC-1, on the other hand, is just about ideal.

Regards,

Bill

I have both.

On the Epson: RAWs if processed in Photoraw are excellent. Body in itself a bit akward - I use it with a hacked Nikon grip - works very well. Difficult to see 28mm frame lines with glasses. Viewfinder very bright. Overall my favourite digital camera and the output up to and including ISO 1600 stunning. Cannot think of any digital rangefinder (or indeed digital camera) I would rather own. When it dies I will have it stuffed and put on the mantle piece ;)

On the D2: The biggest positive surprise in gear I have ever encountered. Bought it on inspiration from Thorsten and a certain Mr. Thawley :D. ISO 100 jpegs wonderful – I don´t bother shooting RAWs with that. Viewfinder much better than rumoured. Body size, weight etc. perfect. Lens brilliant. I honestly don’t understand [from a user’s viewpoint] why Leica just didn’t continue improving on this concept.

Which one: If I really, really needed to get the picture (say a wedding or something) I would go with the D2. If I were to enjoy myself 100% (and not just 99.99999% as with the Leica) I would go with the Epson.

Either one brings me far more pleasure than I would get from a top of the line DSLR. Although I bought the D2 refurbished I expect it to outlive the Epson.

getting away from how they handle - zooms, finders... - how does the image quality compare (assuming the rd-1 is using 'comparable' glass).

Thanks
