Does this Digilux 2 look to be in good shape to you?

I have been considering getting one of these, seems like a pretty decent deal at $450 - however no power adaptor, however it will turn on based on battery life. Here are some pics the seller sent me.. what do you think. Seems like it would be a nice cam for street photog!

larger but not more clear

slightly better view perhaps.

again larger but not necessarily more clear.

The only concern I have is that it looks like there may be particulate inside the lens - could be dust on the surface though.

The price is fine, but I am not sure I'd buy it unless I could inspect and test it in person. The picture does not tell you much. I'd I am not saying this might be the case about this seller or camera, but I am weary of electronic items sold without chargers or batteries because they cannot be properly tested.

I assume that the seller is not within driving distance, otherwise I'd buy a charger and spare battery (on Amazon they carry both) and visit the seller with a fully charged battery. I would also bring a laptop and an SD card so you can do a proper test: take a few pics, upload them to the laptop and take a good look at them.

I hope this helps and good luck!

Alberto

cosmetically it looks fine, though there;s no side pictures. Usually Digilux 2 paint wear on the side (because the friction against the strap). Also, it comes with the UV filter, which can save you $60 already.

Try to buy the Lumix LC1 charger and battery (100% compatible with the D2, but cheaper) and test the camera. Also, follow Alberto's advice and take some pictures and inspect them in your computer. I didn't do this to my spare D2 and its pictures has soft corners. I am planning to send it to Leica so they can fix this.

Thanks for the input guys! I am going to go ahead with it - and the seller is allowing paypal - and verified. When I agree to the final deal I will let the seller know it has to meet quality standards or I will return it (at my expense) for a refund.

Aside from soft corners anything else I should look out for? Any common issues with this unit (other than the sensor recall)? I wish the seller was local but unfortunately not - do you think I should just wait or does verified paypal seem ok with a seller understanding?

Thanks again for all the help - Ive been curious about the cult following this camera has - and am on the search to find the right cam for myself!

looks like a stolen camera taking in consideration price and the fact does'n come with power supply. If camera looks good and take pictures well (zoom and focus barrels works smooth) it's a good price.

I hunt a digilux 2 on ebay for quite some time and my max is 600$. I could never get one since the price goes up to 750.

Take it, if you don't have regrets that you probably buy a stolen camera!

Alarm bells ring when you see something like this - of course sometimes people do lose stuff so there could be a genuine reason.

I'd ask the seller a few questions - why it hasn't go the charger, has the sensor been replaced, what is the serial number (so you can check with Leica if its been reported stolen) and details of any known defects - is the LCD in good condition etc., or best still some more photos.

If the seller is honest they shouldn't have any objection to these requests.

The seller said he bought it at a garage sale (sounds fishy) - I haven't asked for the serial number yet, but will. There were more pics he sent - i just only posted the two most clear - the lcd is scratch free. I'm also going to search the area for any posts about stolen leica's.

There's actually one positive - the seller listed it with their phone number - which is not typical behaviour for someone with stolen property - they tend to do everything with throw away accounts at hotmail etc - additional the email address looks legit.

Throw away SIM card?

hmmmm ....... kind of suspicious..... $450 ?, when all the others are selling in the $650 -$750 range ?

yard sale ? ..... a good leica sitting on a yard sale table ?

go with the previous advice .... see if it's been reported stolen if you can (do insurance companies share this kind of info ?)

BTW ... my D2 power supply was lost (along with all my luggage) by the airlines and i got a new 3rd party one for $30.

This sounds like one I almost went for on Craigslist a few weeks ago. Seller was in the DC area. Similar setup. Good condition camera with no charger, but all the other accessories. After exchanging a few emails I decided to pass. It just didn't feel "right." Seller had his phone number listed too. Tried calling it and got someone who had no idea who the seller was, barely spoke english, and had no idea what I was talking about. Not saying the guy wasn't legit, but it just set off too many flags for me to be comfortable going through the deal.

I checked with Leica and they have no report of theft or sensor replacement on the unit. I have a pilot friend stationed in the area who is willing to go and check the camera out for me - I have a verified paypal address for the seller, and phone contact. I actually feel like i've done just about everything I can to verify this isn't stolen.

When my friend goes to check it out, i'll have him test all the mechanics of the unit - what is the final word on sensor replacement if it goes bad? I have read dec 2010 as the extension and also december 2011.

Thanks for all the excellent feedback in this thread btw.

@pete - yes, could be a disposable prepaid I suppose, but the verified paypal is a + as it is linked to a bank account.

>>>I checked with Leica and they have no report of theft or sensor replacement on the unit

Did you check with Leica if you can replace the sensor for free if required (you need to do this sooner or later)? Will Lecia do the sensor replacement if the serial number appeared in the thief-list later? This is more important than buying a third party battery+charger (for $30 in xbay)and the cosmetic outlook of the D2!! I won't buy any D2 or LC1 if the sensor is not (or can't be) replaced.

I think I am going to pass on this - aside from not being able to check it out myself - I am such a newbie I just think i need to stick to the d-lux 4 and work on my photog from there. I see so many wonderful photos from the DL4 - getting another cam right now is probably cart before the horse, especially if it's not a dslr with added zoom. Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

Why would you not buy if the sensor has not been replaced? Did they all need to be replaced?
