2 Questions: NR and Low Budget 28mm

Hi All

First, greetings to all.

My first question relates to the M8's built in Noise Reduction: do users recommend disabling it? I enjoy long exposure photography and wonder if this feature reduces detail in the final file more than a 3rd party solution.

Secondly, recommendations for a 28mm in the lower price range? I have a CV 28/2 which I'm not entirely satisfied with due to its focus shifting issues. I'm very happy to buy used equipment - my 90mm is 40 years young! Are there any really good sub USD$1000 28mm lenses out there?

Many Thanks!

Kevin

Err...which built-in noise reduction? Or do you mean the black-frame hot pixel removing on long exposures? It cannot be disabled, and a good thing too, as you would never be able to duplicate the effect in software. It is not like software noisereduction. It actually takes a second exposure and maps out the hot pixels. This has no visible effect on the resolution.

I'd recommend the 28mm/2 Ultron, get a good copy and you won't be disappointed :D It's not as sharp as Leica's asph lenses, but it's sharp enough for me at f/2 and it also has a bit of that famous leica glow wide open. Very good for people :) Stopped down to f/2.8 its almost on par with my Zeiss Distagon ZF 35/2, a legendary lens in the Nikon camp known for it's unbeatable contrast and sharpness.

If you want to see some shots taken with this combo, check out my blog : ashraf azlan photoblog

Pretty much any post tagged with Leica is shot using an M8 and 28/2 Ultron

I guess the only real problem with CV lenses is that some samples are not as good as they should be. I´ve had two 1,9/28s. Both were great on my M film cameras, but the last one would not focus properly on the M8 I had then.

But; find a good sample, and you´re all set - even if it´s a bit biggish.

Wow...

A more diverse group of replies than I expected!

I was hoping someone would be able to point me in the direction of a faster optic.

I do love the f/2.0 aperture but the lens performs best, to my eyes, at f/2.8. I'm considering the Konica m 28/2.8 based on that judgement, and the fact that my Konica M 50/2.0 is so lovely, even wide open.

Any comments on the older versions of the 28mm Elmarit?

The 28mm Orion is interesting, I must say, but just a little slow for wedding use...

Thanks again. Your opinions are highly valued.

Orion is not a substitute of anything but something fun, weird and inexpensive on a sunny day.

all of the above mentioned options are great. think about rendering and overall ergonomics.
