Advertisement Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Hi jsrockit, Take a look here X1 or Contax T2?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
nhabedi Posted December 14, 2009 Share #22 Â Posted December 14, 2009 Who says you have to have your arms completely extended when using an LCD? Â I think that's the case if you're long-sighted and refuse to wear glasses...
jsrockit Posted December 14, 2009 Share #23 Â Posted December 14, 2009 I think that's the case if you're long-sighted and refuse to wear glasses... Â True...I wear my glasses! If I didn't, I'd have top hold the LCD screen 2" from my eyes to see.
lct Posted December 15, 2009 Share #24 Â Posted December 15, 2009 I tend to follow the pov of Chasseur d'Images here. The flash could have been set at a more usual place and a good old VF in lieu of the latter. As for composing, metering and focusing with a LCD, what can i say? To each his own? OK let's say that
jsrockit Posted December 15, 2009 Share #25 Â Posted December 15, 2009 The flash could have been set at a more usual place and a good old VF in lieu of the latter. Â I agree... they could have left the flash off and gave us a viewfinder...or better yet, rangefinder!
Dan States Posted December 15, 2009 Share #26 Â Posted December 15, 2009 They do offer a viewfinder and it would be centered over the lens...on the flash socket. Why would I want a viewfinder further off center...so I can have paralax in two directions?
AlanJW Posted December 15, 2009 Share #27 Â Posted December 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Contax T3 was one of my favorite small cameras. Olympus XA also. But Contax is out of the camera business since 2005. Kyocera couldn't make a go of it but Olympus is getting there with the EP series. I would love to have a FF camera with a T3 form factor. I have to believe that as sensor chips develop we will see an increase in chip size with accompanying increases in photosite size, decrease in noise, etc. Competition will lead us there --- I hope. Why would I want a viewfinder further off center...so I can have paralax in two directions? Â The main reason would be to make it pocketable. A viewfinder further off center works for the Leica M and it worked for lots of other cameras for decades.

Guest Evel Knievel Posted December 15, 2009 Share #30 Â Posted December 15, 2009 In my good old film days I used a lomo. So the X1 will be the perfect cam for me. Â I never use a viewfinder!
contaxgary Posted December 15, 2009 Author Share #31 Â Posted December 15, 2009 It is clear to me that Leica produces the absolute best product possible for their perceived market, within the limits of their budget and market projections. This also describes why they are not likely to produce a breakthrough product. For example, the M9 doesn't use state of the art camera specific processing units. The X1 uses a lens/sensor combination that will not fully retract into the camera body, modest low ISO performance and relatively (DSLR) slow autofocus (average when compared to the compact market). Leica must contract for major components and so a completely new camera is difficult for a small, cash strapped company. I may end up purchasing an X1. My lust for the M9 evaporated rather quickly and not because of cost, but I see it and the X1 as transitional products. I'm thinking that Canon, Sony, or possibly Nikon will provide us with that breakthrough. I'm talking about a Contax T2 form factor, with great low light capability and fast autofocus and possibly a smaller interchangeable lens option. It is quite possible that the days of the rangefinder and the SLR are numbered. New mirrorless digital designs can replace both. They can't replace film. Unfortunately, Canon, Sony and Nikon are likely to produce cameras with auto-everything and menu/button based functions . This is why I just might purchase the X1. Leica needs to stay around to produce the next generation based on these breakthrough Japanese technologies. I want traditional controls, but I want the technology in a small package and I have no question, but that the X1 is a much better camera than I am a photographer. Dan States Posted December 16, 2009 Share #33 Â Posted December 16, 2009 Hmmm... many cameras have worked fine with the viewfinder off center... even HCB's Leica that's been pictured in this forum a few times. Â M cameras have paralax compensating finders and the offset on LTM cameras is extremely slight and mitigated by the minimum focus distance of 1m. Naturally a modern digital camera is expected to focus much closer. Â Shooting with a finder at your eye these days draws funny looks so if you are a street shooter I'd say F8, ISO800 and focused on 10' and you will nail anything that comes your way without bringing the camera to your eye or attention to yourself. Â Funny that in days past we all talked about shooting "from the hip" with the Leica etc...now we have cameras that are perfect for that kind of photography and we want viewfinders again!
