markpsf Posted December 14, 2009 Share #21 Posted December 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ronald: Sean Reid noted some real glitches in the manual control functions of the camera in his otherwise very positive review. He reported these to Leica but we have no way of knowing whether they've responded to this. Since my primary interest is in using the camera with zone focusing, I'd appreciate your take on that. Thanks. Mark
Advertisement Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Hi markpsf, Take a look here I love my X1. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wda Posted December 14, 2009 Share #22 Posted December 14, 2009 firmware was: 0.7xx Ronald, that suggests that you have a pre-release review model. Would that be correct?
Rona!d Posted December 14, 2009 Author Share #23 Posted December 14, 2009 Mark & David, i had one for some hours last month, at the moment i cannot say anything more that I´m really exited how the production model will work. R.
markpsf Posted December 14, 2009 Share #24 Posted December 14, 2009 I am clear about your enthusiasm for the camera and that in itself is encouraging. But I'm unclear about why you can't say anything more. Some understanding with Leica? The fact that your experience was more intuitive than analytical? Not enough experience with the camera? Please understand that these comments are not the least bit critical.I'm just trying to better understand. The concern I stated above, based on the report from Sean, a reviewer I greatly respect, has still not been answered by anyone re whether the manual focus control issues have been addressed and corrected. Eventually I know we'll get the answer. I was hoping you could help shed some additional light. Grazie. Mark Like many of you I had one for some hours, i played with it, mainly to see if it would be worth a deeper test like the D-Lux4 was last year. As long as nobody official say: "This is it and nothing will be changed with hard- & software" i will not say much more than giving my first positive impression. At the moment I´m not a professional camera reviewer for the X1 like Sean Read seems to be, therefore i wouldn´t do wrong telling people "Couldn´t find any face-detection function" etc. (which he later found because it was there). You see, it´s not easy giving your first impressions, even for a professional reviewer like Sean Read is. For me it´s better to wait and when it´s time to tell details, I may do. Just one thing: I always wanted a camera that size with these technical datas (maybe with a bit faster lens, but it´s ok). It´s not perfect, it costs a lot of money and i have to wait what the other companies will show till mid of next year. This is a camera class i don´t necessarily need a LEICA, but it is quit interesting anyway.
digitalfx Posted December 14, 2009 Share #27 Posted December 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) We are not looking for a polished "reviewers" review of the camera. I assumed from your first post that you received a production X1 from a dealer that you purchased, is this not the case? If it is, please tell us more (good, bad or indifferent)...it does not have to be a perfect review, just your opinion. Based on your posts though, it seems like you did not purchase a production unit from a dealer. We would all love to know.

Based on your posts though, it seems like you did not purchase a production unit from a dealer. We would all love to know. At the moment there is no dealer i know who can sell (and DELIVER) X1 cameras to end consumers right now. This may change in the next days, but i hope it was clear, that a firmware 0.7xx camera is not a production model. I was happy to have one for some hours. And like with M8, M9 and other "early" Leicas, these first ones i call "my" first ones. That does not mean, i keep them. About the X1 i´m pretty sure firmware will be changed from "my" first model to the ones your dealer will distribute. I don´t expect anything big will change with the hardware from November till distribution date but there will be a difference between the "first working hands on" model i could touch back in September which was slightly different to the one i had last month. My very first impression was: damn lighweigth for a Leica, but later i said to myself: This one you´d take with you when the M cameras are too bulky and heavy. I wouldn´t use the handgrip much as this makes the camera too big for my taste but i´d take the external finder and try to find my peace with shooting the non-chimping style. What i dislike is the extending lens, this takes some time like with any other similar camera (also the D-Lux4), i´d prefer a kind of fixed but still compact lens but this seems to be impossible or a hard nut, otherwise Leica would have used such a thing. jl4069 Posted December 14, 2009 Share #29 Posted December 14, 2009 I'm going to try and read between the lines of Ronald's post just a bit... To me this means basically that the Cmos sensor is simply not really close in its IQ to the CCD as in the M8, and the lack of lens choice is also somewhat limiting for the price. Ok I think thats about right. J

Ok I think thats about right. J At the moment the X1 is kind of a unique camera (except the Sigma) but i expect other companies will follow and at a lower price level. It will be interesting to see which sensors they will put in and how the X1-sensor and lens combination can stand this expected competition. Also it will be interesting to see which company will offer the most perfect user interface, it´s not only the lens and sensor, i expect a camera which can be used most similar intuitive to my pro-cameras. From the Leica users point of view one should decide very personal if the X1 could be a good companion for the digital Ms, for these situations an M is "too much", "too heavy" whatever. For a Leica beginner or Leica digital beginner this camera could be interesting, but also a used M8 with a midprice cron 35 or cron 50 could do (M8 if high ISO is not his main goal but image quality is). What attracts me with the X1 is the fact, that i get a very good picture quality in a light and compact body with a good performance in high-ISO settings. Sometimes I´m too lazy to take a big DSLR or M on a 2 days trip and it´s good to know that i "could" do pictures i can use for magazines. That´s the field the X1 could become my choice.
