davidada Posted December 3, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 3, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Because of the interest and disbelief generated in my opinion that the M8 delivers medium format print quality I have decided to let LUF decide for themselves. I will create from a raw DNG file a 27x40 inch archival print to exhibition standards printed with the K3 inkset on Crane Museo Max 330gsm paper on Epson 9800. The normal price is $400, LUF price $250.00 plus shipping and packing fee of $50.00 anywhere in the world via fedex. If this offer offends the board please feel free to take it down
Advertisement Posted December 3, 2006 Posted December 3, 2006 Hi davidada, Take a look here Leica Forum Archival print offer . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
sean_reid Posted December 4, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 4, 2006 Those who have not followed the 30 x 40 thread may not know that various people have asked David if he would be willing to sell example prints. So before somebody (perhaps new to the forum) jumps all over him for this, please first read the 30 x 40 thead to understand this offer in context. Also, to clarify, I believe that David (like myself) sees the M8 as a camera that produces files which are on par with scanned medium format film, not a MF digital back. And, yes, I think many of us realize that digital capture will never look exactly like scanned film, etc. But many of us who work with digital capture are constantly looking to see which digital tools will serve the purposes that film tools once did for us. I've described the M8 as the digital "Texas Leica" early on and I remain of the same mind. Cheers, Sean
blakley Posted December 4, 2006 Share #3 Posted December 4, 2006 The offer certainly doesn't offend me - this is a wonderfully generous and useful thing to do, David, given what must be amazing demands on your time from "real" work. Thank you very much for the offer - I'll have to see if I have a file worth taking time away from your commercial clients. One question - is this a "color only" offer, or will you also produce a black & white print this size?
Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 4, 2006 Share #4 Posted December 4, 2006 David i for one think this is a great idea and a generous offer and also in line what i think is right that a user of leica gear that owns the M8 or DMR that also partcipates as a regular forum member that if he or she has a special talent and/or service that they can provide other forum members that may have a interest in a product or service should be allowed to casually offer it to LUF members. I am not a moderator or the owner of this site but my opinion is if we are allowed to do this in a non disturbing way that is governed by the moderators and owners of this site and under there guidance and rules be allowed to offer this to other LUF members. I for one will be doing this as soon as i have a image that i would love to have hanging in my home. Also i would like to thank you for the generous offer and also your insight on large format printing.

Also i would like to thank you for the generous offer and also your insight on large format printing. Well, I will offer a free (pay only if you like it) inkjet printer profile to any member of this board who wants to make his own inkjet prints. Of course, I will also extend this offer to David The interesting thing about David's offer is that he works directly with the DNG file - in other words he will make the esthetic decisions himself, wth his considerable skills. harmsr Posted December 4, 2006 Share #7 Posted December 4, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) David, Your offer is very appreciated, as I'm dying to see this type of print from the M8. Now I just have to take one worthy of the wall and send it to you. Thanks again. Ray
fotografr Posted December 4, 2006 Share #8 Posted December 4, 2006 I only need two things to take you up on your kind offer: 1) My M8. 2) A worthy image from it.
jrc Posted December 4, 2006 Share #9 Posted December 4, 2006 David, Actually, what I would like -- and feel free to turn it down -- is what you consider to be an excellent M8 file from *any* source, printed to your standards. I would pay you $300, just to see what standard I should be shooting for all down the line -- the shooting, the post-processing, the printing. Scott Gregory Posted December 4, 2006 Share #10 Posted December 4, 2006 Just as an addition to this discussion, I have been following the 30 x 48 thread comments with much interest especially the folks who have dropped by David's studio to see first hand the large M8 prints. I had a chance to attend Leica Days at Eight Elm Camera in Toronto on Friday and got to check out the Leica goodies including the M8 and take a few shots with the camera. I've been waiting for one and I'm still following through. I was impressed. On display was a large colour print that was taken with the M8. The print I believe was about 30 x 48 or just a bit less and it was truly spectacular. I do believe seeing is believing and I think anyone that takes David up on his offer will be very pleased with what they see. Scott
davidada Posted December 4, 2006 Author Share #11 Posted December 4, 2006 David, Actually, what I would like -- and feel free to turn it down -- is what you consider to be an excellent M8 file from *any* source, printed to your standards. I would pay you $300, just to see what standard I should be shooting for all down the line -- the shooting, the post-processing, the printing. JC To answer a few questions: Yes I will gladly do B&W as well as colour files. I prefer to work from the raw file because of the workflow in enlarging, however if there has been heavy work done the raw file can be accompanied by a finished file and I will recreate in my file the work done. I will only work from LUF members files, I think you can understand that I cannot let finished prints from other sources leave my studio. The offer is open to DMR and M8 users who may want to compare. Thanks
davidada Posted December 4, 2006 Author Share #12 Posted December 4, 2006 One other item - the large format prints I have been making are all at 160 iso So if anyone is thinking of this offer keep that in mind to get the highest quality.

Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 4, 2006 Share #14 Posted December 4, 2006 Yup , this should be fun. I think what would be fun is have a thread of images that folks chose to print.

eronald Posted December 4, 2006 Share #16 Posted December 4, 2006 David, I am thinking of having the attached M8 image printed. The problem is the original is a crop of about 6MP out of the DNG - for compositional reasons. Interested ? Edmund Welcome, dear visitor! davidada Posted December 4, 2006 Author Share #17 Posted December 4, 2006 I think this will still work for you,it looks(on my screen) like a high contrast image that is more about composition and contrast than micro detail. However only by looking and processing the actual file will I know. One thing I want to stress is that I will not make a print if I feel it does not meet certain standards. These are not esthetic standards but more to do with technical issues inherent in a file. So the scenario will be a member sends the file, I will view it get back with reccomendations on paper type , tone and hue, size ( perhaps a 20x30 would be better for some files) etc. I then proof and when the proof reaches my standards we print full size. etienne_werner Posted December 4, 2006 Share #18 Posted December 4, 2006 This is what I love about this forum. Sure there are some whinners and 1 or 2 trolls but overall everybody here is more than just friendly they actually have something to say and share with this forum. The sum of all the expertise available and the level of participation makes this one of the best forums around. Bravo to you all. charlesphoto99 Posted December 4, 2006 Share #19 Posted December 4, 2006 I don't doubt the Leica M8 has medium format resolution - but it's not medium format! I think the point most people miss on this debate (and it has been going on ever since the intro of the Canon Mk11) is that 35mm, no matter what the resolution, has a different LOOK from medium format just from the nature of the lenses focal lengths and the resulting depth, not to mention the way one works with it. To prove my point, I've been currently working on a project photographing breakdancers, something one would normally associate with 35mm, film or digital, due to the fast action. Instead, I have chosen to use Mamiya 6 and 7 cameras in order to come up with an entirely different look and take the subject out of the realm one would normally associate it with. I love my Leicas, but I use many different cameras for many different ends. I will be getting an M8 someday (as I have so much glass already why not) but in my opinion it won't replace the look of medium format but will instead have it's own unique quality.
