JeffreyTotaro Posted December 10, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought a Thumbs Up a few weeks ago, the CSEP with the accessory shoe. It was very tight on the M8.2 but I managed to get it off and thought that maybe it would be better on the M9. Well I have filed it down some, brass showing all around the edges and bottom of it and its still way too tight on the M9. I don't think if I force it on there that I'll be able to get it off. Is this normal? Is there a trick? Probably too late to return it since I've hacked it with the file. Thanks!
Advertisement Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Hi JeffreyTotaro, Take a look here Thumbs Up way too tight. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
cheewai_m6 Posted December 10, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 10, 2009 i've heard from several of the m9 owners saying the shoe is extremely tight fit. not just you.
LeicaS2 Posted December 10, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 10, 2009 super super tight, but possible to get it on and off. At the moment I have left it off.
Bo_Lorentzen Posted December 10, 2009 Share #4 Posted December 10, 2009 Yup - tight...
yanidel Posted December 10, 2009 Share #5 Posted December 10, 2009 Same here, very tight but easy to take it off. Actually I think the tight shoe is a good thing, holds my 24mm finder very well.
250swb Posted December 10, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 10, 2009 Yes its very, very tight on my M9. It occured to me that because I take the Thumbs Up on and off a lot (I don't like it spoiIing the lines of the camera all the time) it may eventually open up the nice tight hot shoe through wear or sheer force. So I filed some brass off the Thumbs Up until it was just tight, not insanely tight. The Thumbs Up is a slightly crude casting (but nicely finished) and obviously relies on fine tuning by hand before it is shipped, so I'd guess the tighter shoe of the M9 needs factoring in or another model made for the M9. But its only one or two thousandths that needs to come off. Steve
JeffreyTotaro Posted December 10, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted December 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks everyone, I'll keep working it to make it fit. It has the set screw so making it looser can still be overcome by tightening the screw.
Minos Posted December 15, 2009 Share #8 Posted December 15, 2009 Yes I find it very tight too. It even leaves brass residue on the edges every time I take it off. Not entirely a bad thing, as I have now grown accustomed to holding the m9 totally naked. - The camera, not me... No leather case, no thumbs-up, no M-grip. Just the camera and my Billingham. I find it to be an interesting return to basics to support the weight of the camera in my left hand, using my right hand to "fire" away. Does take a bit of getting used to, though. I find, however, the thumbs-up to be the best third party accessory for an M9, along with the Luigi case. As for those who want to use the thumbs-up on the M9 on a regular basis, I believe removing a little brass, reducing some thickness might indeed be the solution. JeffreyTotaro Posted December 15, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted December 15, 2009 After some more filing I did it to fit snuggly enough but still be easily removed. Now I have to have my Luigi case modified.
adan Posted December 15, 2009 Share #10 Posted December 15, 2009 The hot shoe flanges (the bit with the serial number on it and its twin) and the springs underneath tend to loosen up a bit with time and use, so the manufacturers usually start them at the tight end - same for the Canon 5D I had. My M9 shoe is already a bit smoother/looser than it was 3 months ago right out of the box. I use a 21 finder or an adapter with a PC plug in the shoe most of the time, which have probably helped "break in" the shoe springs.

I guess this suggestion is too late, since you've already attacked your Thumbs-Up with a file - but I discovered that a little candle wax on the edges works wonders. For me it wasn't too much of an issue anyway, because once fitted, the only reason I've since removed my Thumbs-Up has been to clean the camera body (a rare event, related to the phases of the moon and strange supernatural occurences). ashwinrao1 Posted December 15, 2009 Share #12 Posted December 15, 2009 Just slapped my CSEP-1 on the M9. Was a snug fit, but no different than on my M8....There must be some slight sample variation, even a few microns may make a big difference.... pgk Posted December 15, 2009 Share #13 Posted December 15, 2009 The hot shoe flanges (the bit with the serial number on it and its twin) and the springs underneath tend to loosen up a bit with time and use, so the manufacturers usually start them at the tight end - same for the Canon 5D I had. My 5D was very tight too - some brass showing on it now. A friend's 1DSMkIII on the other hand is far too slack a fit so some variation seems to exist everywhere. Samir Jahjah Posted December 17, 2009 Share #14 Posted December 17, 2009 Same here, very tight but easy to take it off. Actually I think the tight shoe is a good thing, holds my 24mm finder very well. Same here...so tight I am not able to fit my Tumb Up Cs 1 !
