Justifying the 0.95 Noctilux

I've been shooting with the Noct ASPH for the past month or so. I've literally not taken the lens off of my M9 because I want to get to know the lens as well as possible (and because I haven't wanted to take the lens off of the camera). In daylight, I've been using an ND filter and shooting as close to wide open as possible because it happens to be a look that I enjoy. Sometimes it works better than others, but I'm having a blast experimenting with combination.

Leica M9 Noctilux f0.95 - a set on Flickr

Kurt - you are beginning to cause me big problems. I bought the Nokton after seeing your terrific images with that lens. And now with the 0.95 Nocti... oh, Heaven help us ;-) (Nice work, damn you.) JB

Very simple to justify a Noctilux 0.95

According to the recent Herr Spiller interview in Welt Online you can give any of his reasons: " First, there are the collectors who buy any M model, which we bring to the market.(Es gibt technikbegeisterte Kunden, die eine höchstwertige Kamera mit einem digitalen Sensor im Vollformat suchen). There are tech-savvy customers who seek a most significant camera with a digital sensor in the full format. (Und es gibt die ambitionierten Fotografen, die nicht irgendeine Kamera wollen, sondern eine mit dem roten Leica-Punkt) And there are the ambitious photographer who want not just any camera, but one with the red Leica dot. (Die wollen beste Qualität und sie wollen zeigen, dass sie sich das leisten können). They want the best quality and they want to show that they can afford it."

Jawohl, die Leidensfähigkeit unserer Kunden ist hoch

:D :D :D

Thanks John. Glad I could be of help! ;) The Nokton is a very good lens. It's very sharp, great in low-light and priced right. But, now having used the Noctilux ASPH for the past month, I'm totally smitten with how good the new Noctilux is ... especially wide-open.

For those that are using C1 and the Noctilux ASPH, you might want to take a look at the clarity slider. Experimenting in the latest version of C1, I noticed that the slider for clarity now includes functionality that allows you to move it into forward and negative values. In the past, I used the slider to bump up micro-contrast on images from the 35lux and 75lux to give them a bit more of a 3D look (at least to my eye). Because the new noct has such good contrast at the base level, is sharp wide open and produces such shallow depth of field, the full range of the clarity slider provides a great way to vary the look of the images produced with the lens. When I move the slider all the way back to -75 or -65, I get a softer look that is very reminiscent of the old noct or a 75lux. When I move the slider to the positive side at +15 to +25, the contrast in the image almost becomes too strong ... but the result is more definition that is closer to the look of a cron with shallow depth of field. Because of the sharpness of the lens at f0.95, over the past few days I've really enjoyed the soft, yet sharp images I can get with the slider moved into that -65 range. To me, the new noct/M9 combination is a great combination to shoot with because you can alter the look in so many ways with just one lens ... and that's only taking into consideration f0.95.

Mainly shooting with my M9 and either the F/1 Noct or the 21mm lux (w/o any finder) depending on circumstances.

Trying hard to decide about the new Noct for this summer. I'd love to see some more comparisons side by side with the f.1 version.

Best,

Bill

  • 4 weeks later...

I first ran across this thread a few months ago when I was researching/justifying the cost of the previous f/1 version of the Noctilux. I've been battling "noctilust" for quite a while at this point in time and had recently tamed the fire within to some manageable degree until I came across this thread again...fate? coincidence? Who knows? All I know is that I have the lust full blown again. Sigh. And now I'm craving the f/0.95, not just the f/1. Double sigh.

Think I will keep this tidbit of info from the other half...at least for now...I'm still paying off my M9, but when that's achieved, I have a distinct feeling the Noctilux will be the next big purchase on my list...and if I can convince myself to sell my beloved 35 Lux, it will be the latest, greatest Nocti. If I just can't part with my 35mm, then it will be the older Nocti. At least that's the plan for now...in the meantime, I might just have to cave and pick up the Voigtlander Nokton to satiate my super fast glass obsession. Glad to see this thread revived (I think)!

I empathize. Can't you sell something else, like an arm, or your left eye? Because, well the Nokton is going to feel like a pinhole compared to that Nocti 0.95. And don't even get started on the new 35mm Lux if it is real, now that is really going to put a squeeze on the budget! :D

My logic is that the Nokton would give me a preview of what the Noctilux would feel like on the M9 as far as weight and size go....and I would get some fast glass action at the same time. On the other hand, I also feel that buying the Nokton would just be a bandaid of sorts until I can get my hands on the real deal...not to say that the Nokton isn't an excellent lens-especially for the price.

And don't even get me started on the new 35 Lux...my current one is only 10 months old, but I am very curious about the new version-as we all are. It would definitely be either the Noctilux f/1, or the new 35mm Lux, or just the Noctilux f/0.95 solo as my only lens. If I could halfway justify keeping my "old" 35 Lux and getting the Noctilux (either new or old), that would be ideal, of course. Perhaps I should purchase a lottery ticket today! ;):)

It's an amazing lens and in combo with M9 it's stunning

There is a little justification if you consider only price, but if you consider the experience and enjoyment, it's just great.

here are some more samples @ f0.95

What a great test of these lenses. I struggle though to derive the true photo benefit of the new Noctilux 0.95 versus some of the others on show. There isn't much between the 1.1 Nokton and the 0.95 as far as bottles of Macallan go.

I think on the streets it might be different, but $9000 dollars different!

Anyone out there just shooting with the M9 & 50/0.95 as their total outfit? I could see the temptation to go with such a wonderful minimalist outfit.

Dear Leica, how about a 35/0.95? :p Probably impossible to keep small-ish but we can dream can't we?

Yes, and enjoying it now my wrist has strengthened...
