I hope I am posting this in the correct area.

This weekend the WestLicht Photographica Auction auction will be held in Vienna, Austria. There will be all sorts of interesting Leica items auctioned alongside (for the first time) some fascinating photographs - many of them historically important and no doubt one or two taken using Leica equipment.

A friend of mine who is a very gifted documentary photographer and I are going along and I wondered if anyone else from the forum was planning to attend? It promises to be quite an event and I am very much looking forward to seeing some of the items listed.

I'm hoping to do a spot of photography around the city whilst I'm there and would be delighted to have company if anyone is interested?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Al

Westlicht auctions are always very interesting, and the adding of photos has been a smart move to enhance their visibility. I was there only once, years ago, and not during an auction... a nice environment.

I usually retain a copy of the catalog and results of the bid, for it's a very significant probe on the collectibles' market.

The results of t he auction is out. The M9 black prototype (with the M8 logo) ended up at EUR15,000, whilst the grey went for EUR2,000. The Leica MS went for a whopping EUR80,000.

However looks like there was the odd bargain...the M6J went for EUR3,000 when a shop in Ginza, Tokyo had it for an equiv of EUR4,232.

Mixed and someway strange results... I'd say it has been an auction with low attendance and some very focused buyers ... some items unsold, some went for very low prices : from a quick review, I noticed a black Elmar 65 WITH VisoIII complete - 400 Euros, some SL - SL2 bodies very cheap, a nice M4 at 420 Euro, a rare SOOZI at 550... even a pair of IIId, which is one of the rarest SM Leicas, went for decent prices.

Westlicht is a superb Gallery. I used to live in Vienna and I would love to be there. But now I'm living too far away.

Here is the link for the M cameras which will be auctioned.

Best,

It is indeed, they've held some fantastic exhibitions there and the selection of Leica equipment on permanent display is quite astonishing!

This was my impression as well seeing the results. Though it always baffles me - and sometimes makes me sad - when I see the enormous prices some items achieved which have nothing else than some militaria connotation.

They also had photos for auction, most of them went for the starting price or a little bit more.

Attendance was fairly good and you are quite correct there was A very focused buyer who bought half the auction on behalf of a Taiwanese billionaire. As soon as you saw his card go up you knew whoever was bidding against him didn't stand a chance - it was quite ruthless! Having said that, there was an exception - he let one lot go and the reason for that was the other bidder was none other than Dr. Kaufmann!

I spoke to the voracious bidder after the auction and he revealed a rather staggering secret that I can't divulge here, but don't worry, if what he said is true we shall all know about it within a couple of weeks.

Incidentally it was the prices attained by some of the viewfinders that I found most astonishing (one went for 3400 Euro and that's before buyer's premium), see:

Or gonna take over the whole Leitz plant...:D
Yes, you're right! ... Jokes aside, that would make sense! An invisible Mr. X from Taiwan with enough buying power to get anything Leica, whether old or new... and his courtesy to Dr. Kaufmann! Veeery strange.....!

A classic example of what conditions mean.

Lot117,Lot 118 both Berg Elmar 10,5cm.the ,first near mint A/B boxed with finder, etc.

Euro 3.400+20-25% fees , the second in good conditions B+ Euro 550 + fees.

Same thing happened with Lot 105-106-107 9cm. Fat Elmar

Logaritmic progression Price/Conditions...
