Leica X1 LCD screen only 230k pixel - dealbreaker for me

Have you actually handled a functional X1? The LCD could be a little higher res, but it is far from unusable.

Here's my advice.

Don't get caught up in the spec sheet wars and instead concentrate on taking better pictures.

(hint: a higher res screen won't improve your picture taking skills)

I definitely think it would. I know I would not be able to focus properly if I had to use the LCD screen on my M8. Of course I have not handled an actual X1, but assuming it has the same res as the M8. As I said, I prefer manual focus over AF on many occasions.

BTW, could we be spared with "such and such won't improve your photographic skills" etc?

There are no problems focusing with the current screen. I tried it in AF and MF mode.

It may not be the prettiest display, but it works.

The AF is of average speed and accuracy.

MF works, but Leica's implementation of scale focusing is primitive. That's a far bigger problem than the LCD resolution.

Sure, as soon as people stop being camera operators, instead of photographers.

If people spent as much time and energy thinking about actual photography as

they do spec sheets, then the world would be awash in talent like HCB.

This is a really funny thread. From what I can tell, the folks at Leica apparently wanted to put two things together for a new camera concept: A lens with glass worthy of the name Leica. And a large-ish sensor (and processing electronics) to use with it. (Talk about minimalist.) All in a nice compact little body that would allow one to take and produce sizeable, extraordinary prints for its size.

Now, knowing how expensive Leica optics can be in order to keep the costs down clearly some design decisions had to be made to keep the camera from entering M8 territory.

From what I can tell initially they succeeded in making a smallish camera that definitely produces DSLR quality images.

So what is everyone here complaining about? The LCD.

I am just curious.

On this thread, from all the contributors ACTUALLY how many took ANY pictures with the X1?

How many looked at an original RAW picture from this camera? IMHO arguing about a camera's capabilities based on somebody elses opinion/observation is nothing, but shadowfighting.

I'm sure this camera is very good but personally I find it impossible to use any lcd display if the sun is shining. These things are no way to take pictures. How can you take a good photo when you can't see what you're pointing at. Do you just point the camera in the general direction of your subject and hope for the best? I'd love one of these X1's but without a decent, built-in viewfinder, whatever the quality - no go.

The secret is: external optical viewfinder. Leica makes one for the X1.

Thats all very well but a camera this small I'd keep in my pocket and break it in no time. :)

There are other "small" things, that we are afraid that we might break, but still carry them in our pockets. Sort of.

Yes, if you are going to rely on scale focusing. The problem is that Leica's implementation of that feature is rather primitive. But I agree that in most cases it's the best way to shoot the X1 (or EP-1 or GF-1 etc)

Still waiting for that digital CL.... are you listening Leica? Probably not.

I think it's sad people don't care about getting full value for their money. A lot of people here seem to have money to burn and have lost touch with this concept. A $2000 point and shoot camera should have an LCD screen at least as good as as those selling for $200. We shouldn't even be debating this. It's just common sense.

Of course it is???

You are asking to have mass production sensibilities applied to what is basically bespoke tailoring. There is no mass production here - volume = cheaper. It is ridiculous to have the resolution of the screen be a deal breaker for the camera. There are a lot of people complaining about the price of the camera as it is. But I am sure you would all be OK with a camera that is even more expensive once you add all the "bits", right?

It's the final image that counts - and until I have one in my hands it's not something that I can comment about.

Perhaps you would want them to have an MP3 player, cellphone and gaming device built into it also?
