Ladies and Gentlemen

We are pleased to confirm that the L•Camera Forum Charity Book project is now going live, as of today. It's gestation has been nearly as long as that of the S2, but we believe that we have finally managed to iron out all the creases that we could find and are very pleased that this is now a "live project" :)

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS VERY CAREFULLY, ESPECIALLY THE SUBMISSIONS SECTION.

Details of the project are as follows:-

The Charity:

• The charity to benefit from the proceeds of the book, and the submission fees, will be the
, a charity that supports cancer research
worldwide
. More information is, of course, available from their website.

The Book:

• The book will be produced using the Blurb on-line system, as previously used for the M8 Anniversary Book

• It will have 120 pages

• There will be a £5 mark-up for each book bought, which will be donated to the charity

• There will be two sizes, to account for different depths of pocket.
and
will be offered. Please note that the prices shown on the Blurb website do NOT include shipping, VAT where applicable, or the £5 mark-up.

• Chapters within the book will be based around the Forum's Photo section headings, but with Landscape and Travel split. The number of photographs in each section will, in part, be determined by the number of submissions to each section, but an approximate, notional split could be:

o Landscape 10%

o People 20%

o Tech and Industry 15%

o Travel 15%

o Sport etc 10%

o Architecture 10%

o Nature and Wildlife 10%

o Other 10%

Submissions:

• Contributors must have been members of the Forum for
before 23rd November 2009

• There will be a maximum of 3 submissions per contributor

• There will be a mandatory £10 donation to the charity for each submission, up to a maximum of £30 for the three submissions

• The donations are to be made via the following website:
. Please ensure that your name and Forum nick-name (if different) are included on the final page reached on the donation pages.
It will be obvious when you get there.
(If you don't include your forum "nickname" and allow your name to be visible on the JustGiving website, it becomes extremely difficult to audit who has contributed, and can therefore make submissions. Thank you
)

Without the charitable donation, there will be no consideration of photographs

• Submissions will only be included in the judging process when it has been confirmed that the charitable donation has been made.

• Submissions MUST therefore be accompanied by the email confirmation from the charity donation website, and donations will be visible to all on the charity contribution site

• There is no guarantee of inclusion within book for any contributor

There will be no refund of the charitable donation if your submissions are not used

• Forum rules apply with regards to use of third party cameras / lenses. i.e. at least one component part must be Leica

• Submissions, in the first instance, are to be in accordance with Forum rules viz dimensions and file size.
For the avoidance of doubt, images must be no more than 960 pixels on the longest side and no larger than 293kb file size
. This will be to make sure that the email in-box doesn't get completely swamped with large files.

• Submissions must be in jpg format.

• Submissions to be made to Steve Unsworth via email

• Submissions
must
be accompanied by the following:

• Title

• Sub-forum/Chapter name

• Real name (and Forum nick-name) of contributor

• Equipment used

• Date taken (approx)

• Copy of email confirmation from the charity website

• If a submission is proposed by the contributor to clearly be in an incorrect chapter, the contributor will be emailed and advised in which section it will be included for consideration

• There will be no limit on when the photograph was taken, provided it complies with the rules

• The original photographer will retain full copyright of their work, but by submitting an image he/she is agreeing
that the image can, if selected, be published in the book, on the subsequent public website and on the Leica Forum but
only
in the context of the Leica Forum Book project. If there is to be publication in LFI, a similar Leica based website or in other publications, the respective photographer will be asked for their permission to use the photograph, in advance
.

• Any contributor who does not want his or her photographs to be included on a subsequent website, or for that matter, anywhere other than the book, should make this
absolutely clear
to Steve Unsworth, when submitting the photos for the book project, so that the photographs may be tagged accordingly. This will not affect the judging for the purpose of inclusion within the book in any way, of course.

• The contributor must be the copyright holder of any submitted image

• All submissions must comply with UK and German Law

Closing date for submission of images for consideration will be midnight (GMT) on 31st January 2010

Judging:

• A panel of judges has been agreed from those that volunteered when the book idea was first launched on the Forum

• The judges will remain anonymous

• Judges will not be allowed to "vote" for their own submission(s)

• Judging will take place on every valid submission received for each section and all judges will "vote" on all sections.

• The Project Manager will then collect all the judges' spreadsheets and collate all of the chosen submissions, to determine the overall "Top 10/20/40" for each section

Collection of full res images:

• The Project Manager then emails successful contributors and requests full resolution copies of the images, as required by the Blurb software to maximise the quality on the printed page. This may well be 300 dpi, sRGB.

• EXIF information (if available) will be requested at this time too

• Final submission images must be made without borders, strokes etc. to ensure that the presentation of the photographs is consistent throughout the book.

• There will be a time limit of 3 weeks given for receipt of full resolution images

• If these are not received within the 3 week deadline, a substitute image will be requested from a pool of “nearly made its”

• It will be the contributor's responsibility for making sure that the full resolution image complies with the necessary quality parameters, which will be clearly stated in the email request from the Project Manager

Introduction/History etc:

• Whilst the above is going on, the introduction, history etc pages will be being prepared.

Preparation of book:

• The Project Manager will take control of setting out and actually putting the book together in Blurb

• Both books to be set out in the same manner, subject to the smaller size

Website with all contributions:

• A website will be set up with every submission received included, regardless of whether they were included within the book

• The photographs on the website will be in the order received by Steve Unsworth

• There will be no preference in order for those that made the cut to the book

We thank you for your time in considering this very worthy idea, and we look forward to raising a lot of money for the AICR, as well as contributing to what will be a most interesting book.

PLEASE READ

I have already received the first submission. This is excellent news. However the files I have received are larger than the forum guidelines of 293k. Can I please ask that you keep the size of any submission within the size detailed above by Andy. I will resize the photos that I have received, but could future contributors ensure that the files aren't more than 960 pixels on any side, and 293k or less.

Thank you, I look forward to receiving more entries.

Steve, I have emboldened the sentence about the forum sizes for the initial submissions.

Larger, full res versions will be called for at a later date, should submissions be selected.

If anything in the above set of instructions is unclear, PLEASE ASK! :)

Any guidance on what the criteria for selection will be? I don't honestly expect to have anything of mine included what with the quality of work displayed here but it might help my own selection process if I had some idea of what the judges are looking for.

Thanks.

Thanks.

Ian, the very simple answer is "quality". This book is all about two things:

1. Raising money for charity

2. Showcasing the best images produced by Leica-using Forum members

In short, give it your very best shot!

Regards,

Bill

Can I remind people that when they donate, they must allow the amount of the donation to be visible, so that an audit trail can be kept and cross referenced against the email confirmation, to be sent to Steve at the same time as the submission(s)

Can I also point out that no matter how generous you are, (and we do have some VERY generous members!) you will only get 3 submissions :)

Can people please remember that the images should be no more than 960 pixels on the longest side and 293k in size. So far over half of the entries are larger than this. I can handle those manually, but if I get many more I'll start bouncing them back for correction.

Sorry to be a pain in the rear, but there's potentially quite a lot of work involved if I have to start resizing images.
