leicaM8freak Posted December 1, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 1, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I was one of the first to order the M8. I have been abroad for 3 weeks and asked my dealer that if my M8 came in to send it by courier to my brothers address. (in the Netherlands) Two weeks ago I got a message from my brother that the camera arrived.(surely a Mk1) So it is still waiting ther for me to be picked up. I am in tranfer now and will be in the Netherlands tomorrow, to pick up the camera. But what to do? 1) Shall I leave it packed and well and return it to the dealer awaitng the MkII or Beta version or how you want to call it? 2)Shall I open the box, use the camera and wait untill it is called in for repair? 3)Or last shall I order a second on eand leave this one un-touched...it is bound to be very collectable in a few years time as being the only MK1 non repaired M8? Anyone wants to start bidding already? Any advise welcome, especially from Leica!!!
Advertisement Posted December 1, 2006 Posted December 1, 2006 Hi leicaM8freak, Take a look here BIG M8 dilemma. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
erl Posted December 1, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 1, 2006 Get a life and use it! It's a bloody good camera. If you just want to make money from it, you are wasting your time here. Using it as a 'collectable' is not what we here are on about. I strongly reccommend you use it! and enjoy it.
graphictree Posted December 1, 2006 Share #3 Posted December 1, 2006 I feel your pain... I am similarly in an agony/ecstasy dilemma about when to order my M8. I'm selling my old kit on eBay (including my beloved Digilux 2 - still not convinced that the Digilux 3 with all its extra buttons and built-in ugliness is an upgrade!) to finance this deal but ... when? Do I wait for the M8.2 (if it exists?)? Do I buy now and just enjoy the camera? Do I just spend the money on wine, women and song? I know its an emotional rather than technical decision but ... IR stuff seems like a given - we will have to get used to filters. OK, I can do this. Ghosting and banding has been solved - am I right? Aaargh... the horror of indecision... And to make it worse I'm off to Australia in late January and an M8 would be a lovely addition to my Canon D5 (nice camera but the size of a small family car). What to do? And when? gareth
Guest stnami Posted December 1, 2006 Share #4 Posted December 1, 2006 ... sell the canon as anything the size of a P76 now banned in Australia
leicaM8freak Posted December 1, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted December 1, 2006 Thanks for the reply Erl, even though it is a dilemma for me, the " collectable and anyone an offer part" was meant as a small joke, I am not selling the camera, just wondering what the best would be...I have to send the camera to Solms next week, after being able to play around with it for 2 or 3 days and have to wait for it to return, or if a " hot swap" would be possible now, I think I would prefer that.... I thought Leica people were reading these messages too? Maybe they can give me a straight answer.
rob_x2004 Posted December 1, 2006 Share #6 Posted December 1, 2006 Quite right!!!!!!! Ask for opinions on the internet before you ring your dealer and find out what the options are. I mean why make up your own mind. Someone else should do it for you. Lord R
rob_x2004 Posted December 1, 2006 Share #7 Posted December 1, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Imants I can tell you quite plainly, I am allowed on the streets with an R9. It does fit in the boot of a P76. In fact two fit in the boot of a P76. Ok...I would have to go measure up before I committed to saying that three...might... leicaM8freak Posted December 1, 2006 Author Share #9 Posted December 1, 2006 Quite right!!!!!!! Ask for opinions on the internet before you ring your dealer and find out what the options are. I mean why make up your own mind. Someone else should do it for you Well thank you for your kind reply, but to inform you, my dealer does not know what is going to happen, and as I stated in my post I presumed Leica was reading these posts too... So I was hoping for an answer from them... I am very well able to make up my own mind, as soon as I know what my options are. Only realised too late that this is the wrong place to ask, since it seems a lot of people are only here for the joy to be able to make a joke of others. So please keep your " cute" remarks for yourself and let people who might know what really is going to happen answer my question.

frc Posted December 1, 2006 Share #11 Posted December 1, 2006 Hi LeicaM8freak, Sometimes I have difficulties recognising a joke but yours was so obvious I noticed it at once. It's a relief to me to find out I'm not the only one with a deficit like this. Others seem even more handicapped.( ;-), LOL or any other humour-warnings should accompany your joke to not make these people nervous ) On topic, If IR-photography is not your core business accepting the flaws the M8 still has is IMHO not an option. Leica's IR-filter option is no option for me. When the flaws are fixed in a manner that makes the camera suitable for my needs I'll buy, but not before that time. If you have confidence in future modifications by Leica I see no need to not unpack the cam, use it and enjoy it. I suppose you ordered it before the issues became evident, so if you are not certain, well obvious........ Still a dilemma. Sorry for not having an answer for you but it may be a support to know that you are not the only one in doubt, I'd love to have an M8 but it has to work as dependable as my current film-M. Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 1, 2006 Share #13 Posted December 1, 2006 I would simply send leica a e-mail on what course of action they recommend since you have not used it yet.
chetccox Posted December 1, 2006 Share #14 Posted December 1, 2006 I sent an email 3 weeks ago. No answer. I sent another 1 week ago. No answer. I repeated that message 3 days ago. No answer. In addition, the questions asked were important to me since I am travelling to India and Nepal again next week. My camera was sent in for repair or whatever you want to call it this past Monday. I am in Warsaw Poland so Solms is not far away. My emails were addressed directly to Steven Lee. They obviously don't care, so good luck with getting a response from them. sean_reid Posted December 1, 2006 Share #15 Posted December 1, 2006 I would simply send leica a e-mail on what course of action they recommend since you have not used it yet. Good advise. Also find out what the time frame would be for each option. Don't worry about the sarcastic comments, etc. here. You'll see that overall, most of the forum is constructive. Cheers, Sean
lct Posted December 1, 2006 Share #16 Posted December 1, 2006 ...Any advise welcome... mhoutman Posted December 1, 2006 Share #17 Posted December 1, 2006 I would recommend you to contact your dealer or even better the dutch importer Transcontinenta (phone 0252-687555). I think they are very much willing to help and assist you further. succes and groet, Michiel
jaapv Posted December 1, 2006 Share #18 Posted December 1, 2006 If in doubt don't I always learnt... But I am having so much fun and good results with mine that I would like to add to your doubt... No tricks, no filters, just my old Summarit, mixed light (fluorescent, daylight, halogen) under AWB. Or is it detail you want: Summicron 35 asph, uncoded, no filter Or a colourful mood: Elmarit 24asph I think, no filter

When talking to one of their people concerning the problems with the M8, he said, their were no problems but rather the internet forums were responcible for creating the problems (!!???) That seems like a very easy way to deny that there are some problems with the M8. We are all seeing something that's not there and are making it in to an issue which is not warranted. I guess he hadn't read Leica's own statement concerning the issues the M8 is/was having. On the other hand I do believe Leica will resolve these problems (at least for Leica lenses).
