They both have beautiful aging faces. I told them I wanted to photograph them as a couple which made them very happy. :-) Stay tuned. Most of us have day jobs, many of you know I'm something of an activist Episcopal/Anglican priest. Here's another D2 shot with me in it. It's a handy camera, I asked a friend who has no background in phototgraphy to take some snaps during a panel discussion on U.S. Sponsored Torture in which I was asked to give a Christian response to the practice of torture. The event took place at the Islamic Institute of Orange County. The man on the right is ACLU attorney Jameel Jaffa who has co-authored a book titled: Administration of Torture. A must read for people of conscience who don't want to see history repeat itself. To date, no senior U.S. officials have been held accountable for condoning torture in violation of the U.S. constitution, the Geneva Conventions and the practice of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. JHAG Posted November 16, 2009 Share #24 Posted November 16, 2009 Wil, I won't comment the obvious artistic qualities of # 2, particularly the troubling motive of his hair and the painted curl on the cross (to me, one of your best image since I follow your work). Usually, I appreciate less and less to see pictures of such poor chaps visibly lost in life, unfairly battered by this world, shot with a camera worth a year of meals — somehow, it's so easy to pull off graphic results with such characters —, for what ? There's been such a series recently, of guys filling themselves of red wine in front of the lens, posted on the french Summilux forum, I guess, and frankly, it was indecent. Here, simply, the empathy you have with him is implicit everywhere in this image, and the story that goes with it gives the picture some true depth. It's like a profane Passion. My hope is that photo's like the portrait of Don Ruben will move some hearts, not just toward charity, but toward an examination of what leads to poverty in a day and age where filthy rich bank executives get billions in tax payer bonuses, even after creating the economic mess we are in. We live in strange and baffling times at the mercy of the corporations, and the corporations show no mercy! BTW I saw Don Ruben today. He came by the church to see me to help with some problems. When did they ? Wilfredo, are you a communist !? Or maybe a true christian. In this situation the camera helped me to make the connection. In some situations, a camera is the best weapon of all. Remember : in death camps, Nazis were taking pictures, proof they were in charge, but any camera in untermensch hands was immediate death. I'm also happy to share that I see Don Ruben regularly at church with his wife and son. He's become part of our parish community. His wife also has a wonderfully wrinkled face.
