Guest stnami Posted November 13, 2009 Share #181 Posted November 13, 2009 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) nahh I don't buy it ...........If they were serious about the AF is something that would have been nutted out at the beginning of the process along with image quality. Judging by the images and highlights it is a -0.7 camera Edited November 13, 2009 by stnami
Advertisement Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Hi Guest stnami, Take a look here The ricoh rival. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
sean_reid Posted November 13, 2009 Share #182 Posted November 13, 2009 Sean, please give us comparative information. When you say the files technical quality is excellent in your opinion what is meant. How do they compare to a D90 or D300s with the same sensor or other cameras with similar sized sensors? Better, worse, as good? In what way does it compare, noise, color depth, DR, etc. How about against the M8 or Epson RD1? That in general larger sensors will beat out smaller sensors is well established so we need a like to like to get a real feeling for what it delivers. When I looked at teh DPR images comparing it with the new Ricoh, the Ricoh beat it hands down IMHO. The GXR had better color depth, clarity, pop, detail and less noise. John, Hello yet again. The file quality/ISO section (as noted in the review) will include the X1, GF1 and DP2 and I hope to have it done next week. Michael R. has some comparisons done in his review that might interest you. Ultimately, though, you may find that you need to do your own comparisons to find out exactly the things you want to know. If you get to do those, down the line when the camera is available, I'm sure they'd be of interest here. Cheers, Sean
Guest stnami Posted November 13, 2009 Share #183 Posted November 13, 2009 (edited) I had a quick play with lightroom a Nic software with these files Ricoh GXR / GR LENS A12 ????????????? - DCFever.com Better than the ones on dpr, some good latitude to push and prod in the mid tones especially towards the darker tones. Viveza picked up some nice colour hues. Edited November 13, 2009 by stnami

jsrockit Posted November 14, 2009 Share #185 Posted November 14, 2009 All I know is that both this Ricoh and the X1 look a lot better than the Panasonics everyone seems to be in love with around here... the pics look natural, while the Panasonics have this weird look to them... like a "video" type of look? This sample looks pretty soft to be honest. Would you have a larger file?
barjohn Posted November 14, 2009 Share #188 Posted November 14, 2009 I was trying to get jsrocket to explain the color problem since he claims that the Ricoh and X1 have better color. The sharpness or lack thereof was not the issue I was seeking an answer to.
stunsworth Posted November 14, 2009 Share #189 Posted November 14, 2009 Boring shot alert! LX2, shot in raw, but I imported into Photoshop with sharpening switched off. Full frame and 100% crop... lct Posted November 14, 2009 Share #191 Posted November 14, 2009 Looks like i'll keep my old Digilux 1 a bit longer. Larger file here.
barjohn Posted November 14, 2009 Share #192 Posted November 14, 2009 You are comparing a small sensor camera with a large DOF with a large sensor camera with a shallow DOF that generally requires sharpening. I'm not sure what your point is.
lct Posted November 14, 2009 Share #193 Posted November 14, 2009 Because i don't use 4/3 sorry and it would not be fair to compare with FF or APS IMHO. Now, you wanted to discuss colors and what you show, well, nothing personal of course, but frankly it's not marvelous to me. But it's just a matter of taste needless to say. De gustibus... barjohn Posted November 14, 2009 Share #194 Posted November 14, 2009 I can appreciate that but jsrocket said it was more video like than film like and I am puzzled what he means by that since he claims the Ricoh and X1 are not.
Ecaton Posted November 14, 2009 Share #195 Posted November 14, 2009 Some more from the GXR with the 50mm equivalent. Ricoh GXR / GR LENS A12 ????????????? - DCFever.com I don't remember having seen such impressive prelaunch samples from any ( compact ) digital, including Oly or Pana m4/3s', Sigma DP2, Leica X1. Difficult to say from so little jpegs but is the pavement behind your green door blue, grey or grey-blue?
Guest stnami Posted November 14, 2009 Share #197 Posted November 14, 2009 (edited) Back to leica/ricoh at this stage ricoh's sensor seems to have better control of the highlights than the X1 even lct's D1 seems to control the highlights better.............. leica's images have a bit more clarity than the ricoh Edited November 14, 2009 by stnami
barjohn Posted November 14, 2009 Share #198 Posted November 14, 2009 Difficult to say from so little jpegs but is the pavement behind your green door blue, grey or grey-blue? You know it's funny but I never noticed before that their is a dramatic difference between the coloration of the walkway on one side of the gate versus the other (I have lived here 10 years and never noticed it). So I went out and looked and discovered that it is clearly visible from the angle the photo was taken but when you are waliking the walkway looking straight down you completely miss the difference. It is either grey-blue or blue-grey depending on angle of view and sun angle in the sky.

Barjohn, don't take what I say to heart too much... I'm just going on feeling, nothing concrete. I just see something, that I cannot corroborate with any scientific evidence, that I don't like in the Panasonic color images. It's not about the colors, which look fine...it is some kind of weird look that I can't figure out. They look like video stills. That said, I am viewing on a laptop screen.
