steve70 Posted November 3, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 3, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello!, Am new to this forum, but have been an old Leica hand, (Older than I would like to admit!.) Anyway, to those of you lucky enough to have already received an M9, can I get some sort of feedback on what the shutter is like? That is to say, how quiet it is? I had an M8 that sounded like a granade going off compared to my old M series, hence I got rid of it. Thank you
Advertisement Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Hi steve70, Take a look here M9 question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
chris_tribble Posted November 3, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 3, 2009 Pretty well the same as the M8.2 MUCH quieter than the original M8. When you combine the quiter shutter with discreet mode you can get away with shooting in places where a DSLR would be a problem - and where the M8 was impossible! jaapv Posted November 3, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 3, 2009 All cameras of he M8/9 series have some variation within the type, but the M9 is really quiet. I cannot hear it from a few meters distant. I think it is even very slightly better than my M8u.
rebelfocus Posted November 3, 2009 Share #4 Posted November 3, 2009 Mine is very similar to my M8.2 but I think it could be slightly quieter and it sounds nicer for some reason. Could be just sample variation but no complaints here. I just love using it in manual in SOFT+DISCREET mode. It makes it sound and feel very like my M7. Bill W Posted November 4, 2009 Share #5 Posted November 4, 2009 The M8 was loud but when you are as hard of hearing as I am they all sound like the M's of old. Actually the 8.2 was a lot softer shutter than the 8. I am looking forward to my 9. I need to get new hearing aids as well but they are about the price of the 18mm. The hearing aids I have will do. cheewai_m6 Posted November 4, 2009 Share #6 Posted November 4, 2009 doesn't the m9 use the same shutter as the r9? which is the same as the m8 and 8.2? not that i'm doubting anyone saying it's a bit quieter.
lars_bergquist Posted November 4, 2009 Share #7 Posted November 4, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Same manufacturer, same general design, but not exactly the same shutter as far as I know. But I agree that the M9 is really quiet. Mine may be extra quiet however, because it lives in a Luigi Crescenzi half-case. There is definitelty a 'blimp effect' there. I like the soft release option too, especially as I do not need the exposure lock. When in doubt, I go manual. Even so, the M9 'trigger action' is not up to that of a well set-up target gun, where the trigger must not move even a fraction of a millimeter after the release itself. There are still some first-class old gunsmiths in Germany; I think Leica should consult one of them, for the M10 ... EricC Posted November 4, 2009 Share #8 Posted November 4, 2009 The first time i used my M9 i was very pleasantly surprised how much quieter it was than my M8, I hadn't considered my M8 to be particularly loud up until then.
steve70 Posted November 4, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted November 4, 2009 Well, I guess you all answered my question, now it's just the wait for the M9 body to come in. Sold all of my new, almost new 5D MKII, so I hope it's worth it. In the mean time have been sing my D-Lux 3. 2 years ago it was responsible for giving me 1st place in the Cleveland, Ohio Plain Dealer 1st Travel Photo Contest. Pic was shot in Barcelona. If you google my name, Stefano Sagri, one should be able to bring the pic up. Thanks again.
