Haven't posted for quite some time but thought I'd mention for those interested that my local dealer Robert White has a 'Big Weekend' coming up on 7th and 8th November. Leica will be there with the M9 plus lenses to play with. There also looks to be some excellent speakers over the weekend.

Details can be found at Robert White - Specialist Camera and Photographic Suppliers of Nikon, Canon, Leica, Hasselblad, Mamiya, Zeiss Ikon, Voigtlander, Quantum etc.

It would really be a big weekend if he had some M9s to actually sell.

Their order list is 40+, don't think they will have M9 for sale, but Leica dealer will be present there with demo M9 to show us what we will get after waiting for several months:)

Yeah, I was high on their waiting list before the actual launch only to find out in early October that I'd been relegated because others had paid IN FULL to jump the queue!! In my view this type of behaviour from any company is dishonourable. I'm not for one moment suggesting that this should have any influence on others but I will never deal again with any company that behaves in this way.

I guess Leica is doing the same...

I have mixed feelings about this as well. However, I'm willing to bet that everyone else is doing it too. It's just that Robert White are honest enough to say so!

My bet is that some are doing it and some are not doing it. ;)

Yes. RG Lewis put me on their list without any deposit and supplied my M9 earlier this month. While I suspect that RG Lewis (and many others) favour regular customers over unknowns they (unlike Robert White) are not swayed by the lure of cash up front.

I would never pay upfront for a camera unless their was a suitable incentive such as the 30% discount scheme when the M8 was launched. At the moment in my opinion Leica are delibratly keeping M9 cameras in short supply to keep the price at recomended retail.Within the next 6 to 12 months they will become more readily available and dealers will start discounting. That is the time to buy unless you just want one asap.

Maybe this all depends on how you look at it. If you need an M9 and can make it "sing", there has to be some value assigned to the 6-12 months of enjoyment you get out of it before the prices come down, no?

I have no problem with this policy, but I wish some dealers were more up front about it. I jumped the line when the D3 was released because I was willing to PIF up front. Depending on the restaurant $20 to $100 will get you a better table or a reservation that you didn't have...been going on since Plato.:)
