well, attending sometimes depends on the place the challenge is held.

after having taken part in berlin and krakow i couldn't come to malta this year, and i'm actually much more interested in barcelona than in venice.

i've been living in giessen, right next to wetzlar for ten years, so the urge to go there is not too big ;)

That's a fair point, some may vote but then not attend if their preferred city isn't chosen.

I think the current system, whilst not perfect, is probably about as inclusive as it can get. Make the effort to attend and you get a say in choosing the shortlist, and hopefully people will only vote if they have some intention of attending.

Or maybe, the winner can decide in future from the shortlist given by those attending........

Agree with James (apart from the bit about the winner deciding :))

It's rather like the discussion we had in the previous thread - the idea is that the whole forum decides on where they would like to see a challenge take place, those who can attend then do - but there's nothing unfair about a forum member choosing a location he'd like to see the competition held in and then deciding he's not able to travel to take part personally.

This is what I was warning you about. You can't have 'The Cult of the Challenge on Tour' where only an increasingly limited few choose where the whole thing goes, then rules get re-written because a particular outcome isn't satisfactory to some members, encouraging fewer to participate

Not attending just because your preferred city is not ultimately chosen smacks of sour grapes to me. I"m happy to go with the flow, perhaps because the chosen city is not one I would ordinarliy visit. It's the meeting up and the Challenge that's the important thing.

Maybe having the voting non-anonymous might be tried? I hear what Robert says but ...... maybe more weight could be given to the votes of previous attenders? Or then again maybe not.

Is there encouragement in the German section?

BTW as I post I see we're back to a dead heat!

Robert, I think the numbers attending have been roughly the same each year since Paris - though I think Berlin may have been the peak - so I'm not sure that there's "an increasingly limited few" making the choices for the following year's location.

That's my point Steve - at the moment the whole forum finally decides where The Challenge goes, which is a good thing. If we 'look at' the system and say, for example that only people who have been on a challenge can vote, which is one option that has been suggested, then it's a bad thing, which would I think lead to fewer and fewer people being interested.

Remember here we're talking about the final ballot, not the initial pick which is made by the participants of the previous challenge, although to be fair the general comment remains evident, the more you limit the ballot, the fewer will be involved and generally there is an equation between involvement and interest.

I tend to agree with Robert here - having the chance to vote about the location for the next challenge appears to lower the entry barrier for forum members considering to join the next round.

Looking at it from the other side - why should someone bother to vote for the location of a competition he has no interest in?

Count me in for 2010, regardless which location makes it in the end.

Been to the Florian before.

We had two (coffee) cups of filter coffee (i.e. small ones), and a ham roll between the two of us. It cost me nearly thirty quid.

It's very worth it for the experience though - one of those things that just "have to be done"

They let you in for nothing just to look at the wallpaper if you want.

Been to the Florian before.

I sat outside and bought a small bottle of water - the cheapest thing on the card. It was sunny and I thought I'd listen to the piano trio for a while. They stopped and went home just after I ordered. Not a bad view though.

Banter, as far as I'm concerned. I've been to both Barcelona and Venice before, and either is a good choice. Surprised Wetzlar didn't get more votes though.

I think we may need some process tweaking for next year's vote - I think it may be an idea to, once we have the shortlist, have a "champion" for each location - presumably the person or persons who suggested it in the first place. They could then write a short post on why they think location X would be good. People could then vote, but I think the vote should be open, rather than a poll. People could then explain why they are voting for a particular location. Both these measures would encourage more thought and involvement in the process, IMO.

Regards,

Bill
